Weaning from designer bags

I'm new to the whole designer bag world, and I do get stares from people who recognizes my bags (such as an LV). I say, don't let people's comments bother you. If you love something, wear it with pride regardless of how much it costs. If it bothers other people, it's their problem, not yours. :)

Since you said no one has said anything bad, ditching these folks doesn't seem necessary and while i am all for using what you love there is such thing as being appropriate for the occasion or the situation.

Your saying that you feel uncomfortable means it's somewhat sucking the joy of these bags and that is to bad, do you feel this way all the time or only certain times?

I am not a premier bag owner, only contemporary but there are times when i would opt for something less 'designer' simply because it just wasn't the time or the place, maybe this is an option for you? something that is more discreet less 'in your face' that it is worth a significant amount.

While I agree with those who say you should carry what you love, regardless of others' opinions, I also feel I don't like to carry "in your face" (i.e. very well known and recognisable) designer bags. Because I know some friends and family consider it a silly way to spend money (which arguably it is, even if it's none of their business) I found I simply didn't love my LV for mainly this reason.

I gravitate towards designer bags that are subtle, with no obvious branding, and not well known where I live (you don't see many people carrying them), like Mulberry and Balenciaga. Perhaps the reason I love these brands is partly because they don't attract too much attention? Food for thought

This is not quite an answer to your question but I'm in a similar situation and what I do is get under the radar designer pieces. For LV emp leather is subtle enough that unless you look for a little while you won't see the pattern. Similarly my laptop bag is LV DG. I don't get comments on them at all.

Same. I don't get anything with visible logos or in popular styles (LV Capucines, LV Tilsit, Hermes Halzan) and no one who doesn't know bags ever notices.

I feel like men never worry about these things - they go off and buy the most expensive cars and watches they can get! The only reason I'd carry a more under the radar bag is if I'm traveling or know it will be in harsh conditions (weather, outdoors, on the ground, etc).

I'm new too,and I'm proud of my LV bags. Maybe I'm more proud of myself, for paying for them with my hard earned money?
I really want a Chanel bag, and some Hermes one day. Just want to buy classic bags that will stand the test of time, and I don't want to throw any more money away on purses just because they're on sale at Winners.

I agree with all those above.

I only just got into designer handbags, but I've driven an expensive car for about 5-6 years. The comments I used to get from friends were quite hurtful. Some people end up revealing their own insecurities by pushing down your success. Of course, there are appropriate time-and-places for certain handbags.

As others have said, I'd ditch the negative people and continue enjoying your designer (or non-designer) goods. :smile1:

Let's face it, even if you sold off all your luxury goods and lived how they told you to live, they'd still find things to nit pick about your lifestyle choices.

No, if it makes you happy to carry them then dont stop. However, if it truly makes you uncomfortable having people make comments or you being the only one from your group with a really expensive bag, then maybe you should stop.

Never let someone bag shame u......I don't carry my flap bags and certain lv bags to work but when I'm out and about trust and believe I carry my bags. Those people commenting are probably envious. Just ignore them and enjoy

I would be more uncomfortable using a bag I didn't love and I am sure I would grow to resent the Hell out of it.
I think you should carry the bags that you love and that are functional for you and ignore the comments.

I've recently stopped buying makeup and skin care as I've got so many back ups and I am running out of storage space. If you're serious you'll need to remove the temptation. Stop looking at new releases, window shopping etc. But I agree with all the comments above, you should carry the bags you like. Ultimately your friends will realise it's your thing and the comment will get old.'

You should buy and use what you want, like others have said, real friends don't judge.

That being said, I've been trying to step away from certain designers lately, I feel like the quality among many brands I've purchased in the past isn't what it used to be. I try and shop my closet now :)

I have a few thoughts after reading your post...I have both designer and non-designer bags...I'm a teacher and teachers aren't exactly in the highest paid category...that being said, my co-workers don't carry designer bags, some choose to buy clothes, others jewelry, and others like to go out for dinner and get expensive wine...we joke around about each others' "things"...so, I guess my first reaction, is use what you love and who cares what others think?

i do own non-designer bags as well...one brand was recommended to me on this forum, called "beggar's pouch" and their leather is divine and bags well made...the other is called posh pockets...the leather is AMAZING and they are incredibly well made...if they were on the NM or Nordies website, they would look like they belonged there...(IMHO)...

not sure if this helps at all....!
