I advocate for the watch as well for all the reasons listed and for this added reason:
Your profession.
It's weird, but status objects do matter in certain professions and men don't always know from jewelry, but they do know about the things that they wear. They know about suit jacket tailoring. They know about ties. They know about collars and dress shoes and belts.
And, they know about watches.
A good watch could elevate you professionally in a profession where being successful matters and there are lots of men around. (Sorry. I don't meant to sound sexist here, but more of little subtlties that keep you in the game).
I have both a Cartier classic gold tank and a Rolex. Once I got the Rolex, it's been all that I wear. I went for a sage green face with diamonds and a rose gold and stainless steel band. An odd combo that looked incredible on my skin. I'm really happy with it.
