Here is my Tanner Bates bag (received this afternoon) made in the russia leather which they get from the tannery you mention in that really interesting article Allan. I have put my original 1786 keyring on top for comparison. Not a bad match in colour and pattern. @papertiger this may interest you too after you mentioning their rugged bags in another handbag thread. I asked for some changes which they happily did.
I am choked with the cold so am unable to comment on the scent yet but aesthetically I am pleased for what it cost (£245). Perhaps a cheaper option before committing to H? [emoji4]

I wish you better!

Really love that, congratulations, good to see, and good to hear they're open to modifications too

Get well soon and I'm looking forward to your comment about the scent. Your bag is pretty! Rugged chic. I'm happy that you got one; we are leather sisters now lol <3 (Also those keys remind me of my time in Edinburgh a few summers ago; I got a similar set for the front door and own room of my B&B <3)

I'm obsessed. I'm thinking of getting this book soon just to fully understand how they arrived at the final recipe. I even mailed the publisher earlier to ask if they're going to release an English version. Unfortunately they said they have no plans for now. Oh well. Thank god there's google translate :)

I'm happy you like it! Although it's rugged it's very nicely finished, with linen stitching and suede interior.
I have been trying to dig around too. I found an old on-line trade directory from 1864 which, although it doesn't give any hint to the recipe, gives a lot of interesting historical background to the leather and its qualities.

PS I speak French but it might take me a while to translate a whole book for you!!!

We be leather geeks. I love it! <3
If you get the chance, you should also look at your bag under direct sunlight. You will see the gorgeous "marbling", and the richness of the brown. It reminds me a bit of mahogany furniture.

Thank you alianrvj~:flowers: wasn't sure if it would be useful to have this on this thread....but I thought it might be useful for comparison with volynka as reference. I'm not an expert so I can't help other then to put a pic up!
Comparison pics are very useful :)

Speaking of comparison, I finally found a bigger picture of the Sac a depeches made with the same 1786 leather

Wow, beautiful!~ yes, I see the similarity with my wallet; very irregular, very handmade! What surprised me is how lightweight it is, so that beautiful depeches must be pretty lightweight too (comparatively speaking). I'll post pic of wallet interior tomorrow with closeups and you can see it more in detail.
