I think $4600 is a lot to spend if you are questioning your choices. I think the DBTY necklace is very overpriced for the amount of carats...however, it is gorgeous and simple and classic. As for the Hermes shawl....I am not an Hermes girl so for me, the price would be too high for just a shawl. My opinion is get what you love, but make sure he is ok with the expense and that you are not just buying for the sake of buying. If jewlery is what you want, I would go to a local jewler where you can choose something or have something made and get way more bang for your buck!!! Whatever your choice, ENJOY!

The sterling silver pieces are an affordable way to have something from Tiffany's.

I think that's actually kind of the problem, image-wise, in terms of Tiffany's being an "exclusive" brand alongside of Cartier and Harry Winston. Part of the price is quality ... and part of the price is linked to the idea that not everybody can have everything from said brand. You pay so much, in part, because most people can't, and won't have what you have. Crazy world, right? But when Tiff's introduced the sterling pieces, their cachet dropped in the eyes of a lot of consumers.

K_M, I think that's right around the point when they introduced the SS lines - I was around the same age, and I remember it making the news. Prior to that, there were a few designer pieces from Peretti and such, but they weren't meant to be affordable, either. The bracelets and such? Those are more like ... bridge lines, I guess.

claudia- im assuming the quality of clarity and cut isnt great. I dont like ot buy diamonds if the information on quality is not available. when its not available thats usually a sign to avoid that product.

But I thought Tiffany always had sterling silver?? :confused1::confused1: In middle school and high school, the "cool" or "rich" girls had the SS toggle bracelets or the peretti open heart pendants.

Tiffany and Co only started selling sterling silver jewelry in 1974; the designer, Elsa Peretti, brought the idea of high end silver jewelry to Tiffany and Co. Prior to that any silver items were such things as housewares.

I read an article several years ago about Tiffany's strategy with their silver jewelry. Realizing it was bringing their image down in terms of perceived exclusivity, they raised the prices of silver to price some of the kids out of the market. They also moved the silver to the back of the store so people walking by wouldn't see a hoard of middle-schoolers in the store so easily.

It still blows me away that Tiffany's marketing has been so successful at convincing many people that their brand is of some higher quality than what can be had elsewhere.

Thanks ladies! You girls are the best.

Just an update - I decided at the last minute to exchange the DBTY for a tennis bracelet. :yahoo: It was a hard decision but when it came down to it - I couldn't resist! Especially when I thought about it... I just couldn't justify the necklace since I already have a DBTY (much smaller diamond and platinum) and that the main reason why I was buying it was because it was beautiful/sparkly and yellow gold aka it matches all my other pieces. Just feels awful typing it now, sounds so greedy! Anyways, I will definitely do a reveal when I get it from my amazing bf. I don't think I can wait til vday!

Although - just curious, do you guys think it's too overtop to stack a tennis bracelet with a love bracelet? :shame:
