I’m not sure if this was already discussed — but does anyone know what is the standard or general rule when it comes to the jewelry packaging?

I think the blue leather box is usually engagement rings, but what about the black velvet box vs the blue paper box?

I noticed compare between me and my friends, we both purchased Tiffany keys from the store directly, and in similar price range some were given in the flat blue paper box, some were presented in the black velvet box.

Is it depends on SA?

As far as I know the silver jewelry is usually given in the pouch and paper box. The velvet box is used for gold/platinum.
That said, some SAs might give you a velvet box although you're purchasing something from the silver line. My SA does this sometimes, for example when I purchased a present for my mom whom he also knows. Those were silver pearl earrings which he packed in a velvet box.

Silver items ALWAYS come in a small pouch n packed inside the paper blue box. Gold and platinum items come in the black velvet box. This seems consistent when buying in store. There was once I received rose gold open heart earrings in the pouch in the paper box. It came from the online store.

Thank you for sharing your story! I guess it could be depends on SA if they have the liberty to choose so. Your SA is very sweet! I got a sterling silver cocktail ring in velvet bot, but my rose gold key with one center diamond was in paper box. My friend had similar experiences. Maybe in general their practice is differentiate by silver and more precious metal.

Hi! I have many Tiffany pieces, and all my fine gold/platinum came in the black box.

For silver though, it’s a hit or miss for me, and I think it depends on the mood of the SA.

I’m not a picky box person, and I never even ask, so all these were just packaged that way.

I have the silver Elsa Peretti Bone cuff and it came in the paper box. But I also have the silver doughnut bangle, and it came in the black felt box.

Same thing for two rings... I have two of Elsa Peretti Cabachon rings, one came in the blue paper box with a pouch and the other came in the black felt box (a huge one).

Thinking now... that is odd... no true consistency for silver.

Now you make me want to ask my SA for black boxes for my bottle necklaces! Ha!

But the gold/platinum is always the black box.

And of course the engagement ring is the cute blue box.

Hope that helps.

Thanks for sharing your insights... My friend and I purchased the enchant keys, mine in rose gold with a center diamond and hers in yellow gold from the NYC flagship store, but they were packed in the blue paper box [emoji20] but my silver cocktail ring came in velvet lol hence why I am wondering haha

That’s so weird! I agree it doesn’t feel nice to buy gold n diamond in a paper box!

Thank you for all the details! It’s very helpful. I feel I’m the only one so far had experience receiving gold/platinum items in paper box haha. Next time if I had similar situation I would just ask for a velvet box haha

I mentioned to my husband when I received my gold necklace that Tiffany felt “cheap” because at Cartier I would’ve gotten a proper box and not just a crappy paper box. This being my first Tiffany piece I had no idea that there were different types of packaging. Nevertheless, I love my necklace even if it came in a paper box. I just wish I had a proper box to store it in when I’m not wearing it.

That’s too funny. I think if you really want a nice box, maybe next time you go, bring your current box with your keys, let them know, and ask if it’s possible to get a velvet box as others got one.

Be very nice and not demanding (SAs don’t like customers who feel entitled). If you are nice, I’ve always found Tiffany to be super accommodating with stuff like this. What you are asking is not unreasonable especially if you tell them you are a bit bummed/sad as others got the velvet box. I would bring your box with your piece and ask to “swap” boxes as a sign that you are not hoarding boxes. Tiffany, of course, won’t want your old box back, but this gesture is more a message that you are legit and not stockpiling blue boxes. Ha! (Then you now also have a pouch for travel... the best of both worlds).

Good luck to you! I hope you can get one!

We got my engagement ring a long long time ago before they came up with the blue leather box.

All my silver pieces were packaged in the dust bag and blue box. Gold pieces were in a velvet box inside the blue box. Once I bought a yellow gold band online in to be shipped to my hotel in NYC as they didn't have it in store and it came in a dustbag and box. Seems like you don't get the velvet box when purchased online. However, I brought the receipt and packaging to my local store in Australia and the kind SA gave me the velvet box. There is always no harm in asking politely. :)

There's no harm in asking your local store for one. I did too even though my purchase was from overseas.
