It's the oldest vanity trick in the book, and most of us have done it more than once.

Vanessa Hudgens was spotted using the glass in a shop window in Beverly Hills to make sure she was looking her best as she stepped out with her boyfriend on Monday.

But the 23-year-old High School Musical star had nothing to worry about, looking great in a floaty summer dress, her dark curls tousled around her pretty face.

Hudgens paired her baby-doll dress with a pair of mushroom-coloured heeled clogs, and slung a bohemian grey crochet purse over her shoulder which had long tassels.

The actress wore a large turquoise ring on her right hand, and a simple gold bracelet on the opposite wrist.

Vanessa's boyfriend, Austin Butler, dressed down in blue jeans, a grey long-sleeved top and a baseball cap.

Since performing her breakout role of Gabriella Montez in High School Musical, Vanessa has been spreading her wings in both the fashion department, and in the kind of roles she has been taking on, in an attempt to cast off her Disney image.

In a recent fashion spread for The Untitled Magazine, the actress makes a glamorous appearance in sophisticated designer clothes, and talks about her transformation.

'High School Musical was incredible and it was so fun and it gave me so many fans which I’m very, very thankful for, but it also closed people’s minds up as to which characters I could portray.'

On more recent film projects such as Spring Breakers with James Franco and Gimme Shelter with Brendan Fraser and Rosario Dawson, she said: 'Definitely crossing over and being able to tackle these grittier parts was a challenge but I feel like I’ve done it! It’s a whole new chapter!'

Hudgens and Butler - also an actor and musician - have been dating since September last year.

She has been seen heading to the gym almost every day in recent weeks and it appears that Vanessa Hudgens is keen to show off the results.

The 23-year-old actress stepped out in a pair of tiny black shorts, which left her pins on display for all to see.

Vanessa teamed the hotpants with a black printed vest and a khaki-coloured shirt for a relaxed style.

She added a fierce element to her outfit with a pair of studded ankle boots.
It was clearly a dressed down day for the starlet, who had pulled her hair back into a loose bun.

Instead of enjoyed a salon blow-dry she appeared to have let her tresses dry naturally leaving them set in curls.

Vanessa has been spied in her workout gear almost every day and it is clear she is on a fitness drive.

She is said to beon a mission to get back in shape ahead of the release of her films Frozen Ground and Gimme Shelter.

Hudgens gained 15lbs in weight for the latter project – and has been making regular trip to the gym in recent weeks.
She has several motion pictures due for release in 2012 and 2013.

In Gimme Shelter, co-starring Brendan Fraser and Rosario Dawson, Vanessa plays a pregnant teenager who seeks out her biological father after leaving her abusive mother's home.

She will also join Mel Gibson, Jessica Alba, and Lady Gaga in the highly-anticipated Robert Rodriguez film Machete Kills, scheduled for July next year.

Vanessa appears as a wild party girl in next year's indie comedy Spring Breakers from eccentric director Harmony Korine, as well as the Nicolas Cage thriller Frozen Ground due out November 30.

Lady in lace: Vanessa Hudgens turns heads at charity fashion event in trendy fit-and-flare dress and patterned tights

She turned 24 on Friday and enjoyed a romantic evening in New York City with boyfriend Austin Butler.

But on Monday Vanessa Hudgens was stepping out solo - and turning heads - in a black lace number at a charity event.

The former High School Musical star updated her fit-and-flare dress with a matching blazer, booties, and tights which had a sexy vine pattern scaling her legs.

Vanessa was among guests at the Charity Meets Fashion Holiday Celebration for Honor Vitea, a non-profit organisation helping to raise funds for displaced children around the world.

The 28-year-old beauty wore a glittering sequinned gown with a sexy middle slit and pungling neckline, which she styled with black Christian Louboutin booties, a studded belt and layered necklaces.

Playfully posing for photographers, she kicked a leg up and held up a full champagne glass as she joined other guests in an elevator.

Meanwhile, Vanessa's outing on Monday came days after she celebrated her 24th year with her actor boyfriend, Austin.

The couple were pictured bundled up on the roof of New York's iconic Empire State Building, with the beautiful skyline and the spectacular city lights to enjoy.

The Sucker Punch star and her beau have been glued to each other's side since they started dating 14 months ago, with lavish public displays of affection left and right.

The pair managed to keep their lovey-dovey behavior on the back burner while taking in the Los Angeles Lakers vs New York Knicks game at Madison Square Garden on Thursday.

Instead, Vanessa was seen clinging to Austin's arm with her head on his shoulder as she watched the players in action.

The actress' budding career seems to be right on track as well.

She has four films set to release in the coming months, including Spring Breakers, about four girls who end up in jail after robbing a restaurant, only to be freed by a drug and arms dealer who gets them to do his shady work.

She will also feature in Machete Kills, Gimme Shelter and The Frozen Ground, set for release next year.
