Upgrading Diamond Studs

If the store does not have large studs, you can try placing a one carat diamond on your earlobe to check. Take a photo with your camera, so you can examine the fit later on.

Thanks Christiflora! I will definitely take your suggestions into consideration. Im going to start looking at different options today. I think the deciding factor might be which setting I like best because I rather not buy the diamonds from one place and get them set at another vendor.

If you buy the diamonds from Brian Gavins or Whiteflash, you can get your setting from them and have the diamonds set free of charge (and with no worry about diamond damage). They have many great choices. If there is a particular design setting you want, you may ask these vendors to source it for you. For example, I found a diamond (from vendor A) and a Vatche setting (vendor Vatche) that I like, I asked Whiteflash to source both for me. They did the evaluation on the diamond for me to review for decision, and arranged to have Vatche set the diamond for me. I worked with Whiteflash only, without having to contact the other vendors.

I bought the 6-prong, Martini (pointed end) earring setting in platinum (with large backs) from Whiteflash. Since I bought the ACA diamonds from Whiteflash, they set the daimonds for me free of charge. Attached photos are for your reference.

I also attached photos of the studs in jackets, in case you change your mind about AME's excellent suggestion.

The Martini setting has pointed backs. Some people who fear about possibility of the pointed backs dicking into the ear holes and they opt for flat backs for comfort. I think the Martini setting is comfortable. As long as the back disc is large, the stud will sit up properly and there will not be a dig-in issue.

I have 3-prong Martini for my smaller studs. I think too many prongs may overwhelm the small diamonds.

Are the bigger studs meant to be worn everyday or are they for occasions when you want to have extra bling?

If I were you, I would keep the 0.9 ctw as everyday earrings, and get bigger studs for special occasions. Or, you may want to gift the small studs to your daughter in the future. Although I do not know the exact cut spec, I suspect your BN Signature diamonds are very sparkly and bright, and thus they are keepers.

If you agree, then you are free to go to any vendor to get your bigger studs. This time, go as big as you can afford, at least 2ctw, because DSS sets in very quickly and you may find yourself in the same situation as today's. As I said before, to help maximize the stud size, consider going down in color to I, and down in clarity to VS2 (or even eye clean Si1 if the vendors are Brian Gavin or Whiteflash).

If, however, you can keep only one pair, you may at least try selling the smaller pair on your own, before moving to the trade-in option. I suspect there is a good demand for your size Diamond earrings, especially that the color, clarity, and cut grade are top. You never know. It is possible that you may get more than what you paid.
This is good advice.

.9 is very good for daily wear.

Good to know about Brian Gavin and White Flash, I didn't know they were able to essentially be "middle men" for you. I thought at least the diamond or setting would have to come from them. But in your case, they basically just located a diamond and setting from two different places and set it for you. Interesting and good to know. Thank you :D

Re the reset: not all vendors work with all designers. BGD does not work with a lot of designers. They have just a very select few.

But I will say that if you really want a larger pair and don't think it's worth trading in and the budget allows, we can find a winning pair from one of several vendors. Obviously you will get good ROI if you trade them in, and you can definitely get them reset later.

Gotcha about the vendors not being able to give many options as far as working with other designers. Seems like I have to think about a lot more components than I thought lol.

It might be easier to try CZs for size comparison. Measure mms instead of weight. Not many places will have larger carat weight in stock and preset.

That's true! That will probably be the easiest/best idea for finding the best size since I will be able to wear them a lot longer. I just hope I find them in a nice setting. The CZ ones I see are usually in those basket setting that jut out ears making them face more to the left and right of me lol

WOW...I've never seen a 6 prong martini setting. Very cool for larger diamonds!

Thank you for sharing the photos of you diamond studs and their jackets! It seems so smart to be able to change the look of your studs and increase the diameter / fanciness. Did you order them together, and does the stud fit into the jacket? or lay on top of it? How does it look from the side? Your settings are beautiful, I was just peeking at the Whiteflash site this morning, daydreaming... :)

The Diamond in the photo is about 1.25 ct (2.5 ctw earrings). The jacket was customed designed to fit my 0.75 ct diamond stud (1.5 ctw earrings). In order for the small Diamond with the three prongs seat lower in the jacket, there is a very thin gap between the Diamond and the jacket. After I got my smaller studs and jackets, The extra size boost from the jacket was not enough to cure my DSS, so I ordered larger diamond studs. When I was trying on the new, larger studs, I randomly placed them in my jackets. Viola, they fit and looked like giant fireballs!

Due to the larger stud size, the large diamonds protrude a bit more, but surprisingly, still look very becoming on the side. As you can see in the photo, the melees on the jacket now look smaller next to the large center Diamond. The result is perfect proportion between the center and melee diamonds. Now, instead of the melees being distracting, the big center Diamond is the focus and main star. A bigger bonus with the slight protruding Diamond is that the combo has more of a 3-dimensional fireball look instead of a disc.

Advice to you per my experience is to try out various Diamond sizes in different size jackets in a jewelry store to see what is the most appealing.

BTW - the melee size in my jacket is 2-pt (0.02 ct). As in the case of diamond rings with halo, the different center Diamond/melee proportion gives different look. When I have time later, I shall dig up some old photos to show you the sideviews of my jacketed earrings. Unfortunately, the photos cannot capture the brilliance of the fireballs.
