Traveling with fine jewelry and handbags post pandemic

Literally this past Saturday, my MIL saw a group of teens dragging out an entire rack of handbags at the Neiman Marcus at Northbrook Court before getting out of her car.

My husband was happy she was still in her car when that happened because she was still carrying a $$$$ bag and wearing nice jewelry with her workout outfit that day.

Crime travels to opportunity. I don’t see the point in being flashy here. If you wear something understated, but luxe, people who know luxury know what it is. Teenage idiots know labels and sparkles. Everything else flies under the radar.

Thank goodness your MIL is OK and was still in her car.

Yes, there was a security guard present and he was calling police but he couldn’t stop a bunch of teens moving the rack into a getaway car.

Crime is not just in Chicago. I am in a Palm Beach County FB group too and there is an increase of crime like this in South Florida as well. It’s a nationwide trend and to be honest, I believe it is an organized national network.

But the criminals here know that Cook County won’t prosecute and that is not helping.

Got through SFO- no issues with my Love at all, thankfully. Made it to Chicago- saw some shady folks in the pick up/ arrivals area and got bad vibes. I noticed I was not alone in making that assessment. Went back in to the airport where a bunch of security people were but not sure why no security people were outside? They just don’t seem to want to do their jobs. They were standing around chatting. Chicago is just not the same city I grew up in and adored. I miss the old days:( looking forward to driving to Oakbrook:)

I think what’s going on in Chicago is temporary. And I truly believe that and am investing in remodeling my downtown condo.

There’s just too much money being poured into new development in the West Loop/Fulton Market, Lincoln Yards, 78… Overwhelmingly, the rich are moving into the city. Multi-million dollar new construction condos in my neighborhood are selling out. And the city desperately needs that tax base.

But if you want to show off at dinner, you need to plan on valet. For shopping, I recommend keeping it low-key and carrying a larger leather tote or duffle to tuck purchases into. When I went to Cartier last weekend, they gave me a discreet plain white shopping bag so I wouldn’t be a target.

(And if you valet, I highly recommend being ready to get into your car as soon as it pulls up and not chat or dilly dally. That’s how luxury cars are getting stolen from the valet stands. Common sense, people!)

I think if I even make it to the city, I will go during the day, underdressed with my husband. I am looking forward to things going back to the way they used to be. I loved living in Lincoln Park and visiting all the great restaurants and shopping around the city. Thank you for all your advice. I had one horrible incident and will do whatever I can to avoid another as much as I can.

Went to Mom Ami Gabi last time and loved it. Will plan to go again. Wanted to go to Geja’s Cafe but not sure. Any other suggestions?

I've heard good things about Lucca Osteria. I forgot there's a Gibson's in Oak Brook, great steaks and splendid martinis. There are a ton of steak houses around, Gibson's is one of the best. I'm not super familiar with Oak Brook, you'll find a lot more. Have fun!

Sorry to reply off topic, but there is a repair service - [email protected]. They do charge to evaluate, but worth asking them. Otherwise I would take to a reputable jeweler, or try the very soft toothbrush trick.
