Hi everyone, I'm currently looking for a watch and I have been overwhelmed by all the different types and designers. My question to the watch lovers is
Do you usually buy a watch because of the designers reputation? (been around forever etc..)
or
Buy lesser known designers of equal quality but less reputation?
or
Judge by price and design mixed with reputation and price?
The reason I ask is that I have found a Canadian company that makes gorgeous watches, but are not that well known. Will people think that its "not as good" as other more known brands? or can watch afficionadoes tell its a gorgeous watch by its quality and by looking at it without knowing its name?

I agree, I am just curious about how people come around to deciding on their watch brands and quality. It seems like a lot of people choose brands like rolex over other lesser known designers so I thought I would post this question out of curiosity!:D

I think that quality is usually easy to see with a piece of jewellery, but because I am new to watches I thought I would ask those who know what theyre talking about if they can tell a quality timpiece from lesser quality by the make not by the brand...i'm hoping people will chime in to give their opinions!

Well I own a Gucci, a Cartier tank f and a Tag Aquaracer. The Gucci would not be considered a brand known for it's watches, but I was given it as a gift and absolutely love it for its design - stainless steel, quirky clasp, no logos so not obvious 'Gucci'. My Tag was a gift for graduation and is a more well known watch brand but I received a less-sporty style watch (which Tag is known for) I received the small model with diamond markers and a pink MOP dial - again, it suits my style and taste and it's not an obvious 'TAG' watch except to those in the know.

My Cartier tank I bought myself after a big budget performance at work with my bonus - it is classic and timeless and probably the most obvious designer watch I own. I did lust after it for ages, but it wasn't because it's 'Cartier', but because it is a stunning piece of design that compliments my other jewellery perfectly.

I think if you're starting your watch collection, start with this watch that has obviously caught your eye. Don't worry about what others think of it.

I would buy whatever goes with your style and budget. If it's something you are wearing every day, it should be something you absolutely love. And for the prices some of these watches are going for, it should be something remarkable that makes your heart sing. Visit your local jewelers and try on as many as you can to figure out what looks great on you.

For me, I consider the brand's reliability and the features of the timepiece. I don't buy with the plan on reselling in the future. But I do like good quality, so above all I'd recommend finding a watch that is stainless steel or gold with sapphire crystal. This way you can be a little harder on it. I wanted a nicer watch because I was tired of cracking the crystal on my Fossil watches, so this is my personal reasoning.

If you do a search on Rolex, this board and others, you'll see that many people like the quality and legacy of the brand, as well as the option to resell if they get bored. There are many other brands that are regarded as more high end than Rolex in the watch world, but Rolex is the most popular.

People can tell if the watch is of good quality based on the materials used and design. But I doubt anyone is looking at your wrist and judging you. I normally compliment people on their outfits or jewelry that is near their face. In my experience, unique watches get more compliments than those that scream designer/expensive. Buy what you like.

yes its so nice it has nice weight but not too heavy, i think I might have to buy it I can't stop thinking about it!! the diamonds are sooo sparkly and im loving the rose gold...sigh........:love:

Candice I am in the same boat as you. That is, trying to figure out what to buy as my 1st nice watch. Your choice is lovely :tup: and you should go for it. I can't keep thinking how stunning it would look with the ring on Bitten's avatar :love:

oooh :nuts: that would be amazing!! I can dream though lol I did just buy a different ring hopefully it will go with it nicely, I might post a thread on it because I'm pretty excited for this purchase!!:graucho:

Love this pic. Do some research on the brand, make sure you are getting a good, quality item that will last a long time if you are paying a designer price. To answer your question about choosing, I bought based on brand reputation, what the brand "stands" for, who they support (equestrian sports in particular), and the beauty/quality combination of the watch itself (and never having to buy a battery!). However, I selected a model that is less popular because I was a little uncomfortable with a watch that was SO recognizable...and I am quite happy with my choice.

Your rose gold combo is lovely, and I like the elegant combined with sporty look...I think this would be a gorgeous watch that you could own for a long, long time.
