Curious if anyone has ever gone through a change of mind with chosen color of gold jewelry. For years, I have only bought rose gold jewelry, but I’m in a phase where I’m not liking it as much and think it is too feminine and/or ages me.

Lately, I’ve really been into white gold. I have always liked it, but my hesitation historically was that some wg looks like steel and other wg requires replating with rhodium. I think I’m getting over that so I have been debating adding the same jewelry I already own in white gold. For example I have a rose gold juc with diamonds and thinking of adding a wg juc with diamonds. And maybe some other white gold jewelry.

Anyone else ever decide you suddenly didn’t like your chosen color of jewelry after so many years? Did you go buy the same jewelry in a different color? And if you did, which did you end up liking more?

Rg was recently fashionable and now wg is coming in more and more, so maybe you're just attuned to fashion or are seeing new pieces that look interesting in wg. Be careful with wg, it doesn't stay very white for long.

I wear all (usual) colours of gold, and usually all at once. I've always liked the 3-coloured gold look, even when I was a kid.

There is also black, brown and green gold.

IMO, the colour that suits someone best never looks too anything, only perfect.

I have and always been a YG babe. I love RG sometimes, but nothing like buttery YG. Especially in 22k or 24k, that yellow color is perfect.

I hate WG. I'd rather get platinum over WG.

Overall though, my interests do fluctuate too. Recently I am liking RG more, but I also love YG at the same time and like to mix both.

Rose gold and yellow gold jewelry can be rhodium plated to make it look like white gold. Any jeweler can do this. It will wear off eventually and will need to be re-plated.

I prefer platinum or antiqued silver if I have to wear a white metal. White gold doesn't wear well on my skin, the rhodium plating wears off quickly, plus the rhodium plating looks harsh with my coloring.

I've worn all three, rose, yellow and white gold. I prefer yellow gold. It looks best on me.

I've never tried any of the other colors of gold.

RG and 22K or 24K YG look best on my skin tone. RG had just started trending when I was getting into fine jewelry, so I've gravitated more towards RG due to its availability. I'll continue to wear it after the trend passes as it just works better for me.

I have a preference for platinum and white metals. I have probably more than double the amount of white metal jewelry than yellow or rose combined. In the beginning, I used to only buy white metals, because I thought it made it easier to coordinate my pieces. But now I like to change up my metal colors every few weeks. Life is too short to wear only yellow gold for the entirety of the rest of your life. Or for me, to only own white metal jewelry.

Even though I still prefer diamonds set against platinum because I think it looks more cohesive, I’m now of the opinion that having a variety of different metal colors makes my jewelry collection more exciting, and also let’s me explore creative ways to coordinate my other accessories’ hardware with my jewelry.

When I’m looking at a piece to buy, the first thing I look for is design. And the metal color comes into play based on what I think suits the design best. For some examples, I think hearts and love motifs would go best in rose. If there’s a smiley face or sun, I’d prefer yellow. And if it’s a star or swan, I’d want white. If I’m neutral about what metal I think suits the design the most, then I pick a color based on what I’m missing in my collection. Unless there is a platinum option, in which case, I almost always go with platinum.

I had platinum pieces before I owned any white gold pieces. So I was shocked when I got my first white gold piece, and it started to turn an off-white color within 6 months. And this was from an expensive luxury brand. It really put me off buying white gold in the future. But as time has gone by, I’ve now become more accepting of buying white gold again. Not necessarily by choice, but because so many designs don’t come in platinum, and I just think the white version looks better. Either way, I’ve just come to deal with the fact that white gold requires a bit more care and maintenance than platinum. Also, I should let you know, the color difference was not very overt. I just happened to be very discerning of the change in hue, because it was on the area that had the most exposure to being scratched.

Anyway, long story short, I loved platinum, only bought white metal pieces, then felt like I had reach maximum saturation with the amount of white metal necklaces, bracelets, rings, brooches I could own in my collection. I started buying other colors, and now I wear all the metal colors. But I rarely mismatch colors. I tend to alternate wearing all white, or all rose, or all yellow.

I started off with yellow gold only but then got into white gold and platinum for a really long time. I started slowly branching out to yellow again a couple of years ago and finally bought some rose and tri color pieces last year. Now I wear all three at the same time.

I was actually looking for a rose gold bracelet to complete my bracelet stack for a while. Couldn’t find anything I really liked and ended up having my jeweler dip an old white gold tennis bracelet in rose gold. It was inexpensive and came out looking great.

I think it’s normal for our preferences to change over time, particularly as trends take hold. I’m old enough now to have lived through a few cycles of this—yellow gold when I was little, then white gold and platinum took over in the early 2000s and yellow gold was suddenly considered too mature and outdated, then yellow gold came back again, then rose gold took over for many years.

Now social media is telling us white metals are back.

I personally would take it slow, and wouldn’t go about duplicating all your pieces in whatever the current trendy metal is (white gold). Focus on design, how much you love a piece, and gaps in your jewelry wardrobe. Inevitably, some other new metal will eventually come in style again. Go with what suits you best.

I have pieces in all metals and don’t mind mixing, but my preference is still yellow gold and is what I think flatters me best.

If I add any more white metals to my collection, they will be in platinum. My skin unfortunately turns rhodium plated white gold to a dull yellowing white fairly quickly.

Thank you for your and everyone’s thoughts! I have seen a couple comments about how skin affects rhodium. Is it due to lotions or perfume use or oils in the skin?

I don’t follow social media trends. Being a gen xr, I like what I like and in adding white gold I wouldn’t duplicate all my jewelry - just some favored ones and then would add some other designs I have found interesting.

I think a main reason for gravitating toward wg is that I wear my Apple Watch mostly which is steel. My other watches are also steel but some two tone yg. Stacking my clover rg next to the Apple Watch just never seems to look right. Perhaps I need something wg next to the watch as a transition item.

Definitely will be taking it slow. This is something that I’ve been thinking over the last six months and on and off for some years. I take forever to pull the trigger on anything as I like to be thoughtful about purchases - how will this work, will I wear it regularly, wear and tear. The rhodium issue is precisely why I’ve held off but perhaps I buy one bangle and see how it does.

I am curious if rhodium plating on earrings wears off easily? I was thinking about wg earrings for everyday wear.

Would love to see photos of stacks regarding incorporation of wg and rg metals :heart: @RJY @sosauce @tinybutterfly @papertiger @forgetmenot301. I am in need of inspiration.

I'll try to get a pic of the stack later today, but I just wanted to say that I have plain unbranded white gold earrings that I wear 3 or 4 times a week and I have yet to see the rhodium wear off. It's been at least 8 years that I have them. I have one white gold tennis bracelet that I've had redipped once in 20 years or so.

Please excuse my dry, wrinkled hands.

The first pic is my usual daily stack. The 2nd one is an alternative depending on where I'm going. I am thinking of resetting the wg tennis bracelet to have the diamonds pop more. The third pic (taken later in the day, hence the different hue) is my left hand stack, though a lot of days it's minus the two-tone bracelet. My e-ring is platinum and the wedding band is platinum and yellow gold. Now, that I think about it, that's really when I switched to white gold and platinum over yellow gold. I remember getting the two-tone wedding and bracelet to tie the two colors together so I could wear both. But I gravitated towards white gold for a long time after.
