Tips for a Cohesive Jewelry Collection

First and foremost, I would decide what color of metal you fancy the most. Many people try to follow trends or the advice of others instead of choosing the metal that he/she likes and is most flattering. If you don't listen to this recommendation, you may regret it unless you like mixing metals.

Secondly, I would try to find which type of jewelry you love the most (earrings, necklaces, and so on). For example, if you love necklaces, then I would recommend finding a classic pendant in the metal of your choice.

Furthermore, decide if you are a diamond lover or not. If you are, educate yourself on identifying quality diamonds. If you think that they are a waste of money or have ethical concerns, don't let anyone convince you otherwise.

It's also important to decide if you value big design houses, mall jewelers, independent designers, or custom jewelers. This is where I see most people go wrong. Don't buy an inspired by piece if you absolutely love the design of Tiffany for instance.

I will give you a personal example:
I have always loved the DBTY necklace from Tiffany. For years, I pined over it! [emoji24] Eventually, I bought a .25 carat diamond necklace in white gold from a very reputable jeweler. I love that necklace to death, and the diamond shines bright! But I recently purchased a .14 carat DBTY necklace in my preferred metal of yellow gold from Tiffany! [emoji7] My heart skips a beat just thinking about it!

Don't waste your money on costume jewelry and overly trendy designs. Save for your dream items rather than buying multiple inexpensive items!

Most importantly, take your time with your purchases! Your heart will sing for the right ones! [emoji173]️
I like ur comments & agree with most, the wife is color conscious & always dresses to match what pendents go with what clothes & also trying to compliment skin tone too. The jewelry I built for her is custom made, not cheap by any means, just not the Tiffany, etc, names to ID good jewelry. What she has is color of gems to match her clothes. With green/teal she will wear the blue zircon in yellow gold, usually with black she will wear padparascha color sapphires because they stand out so well. I always get a kick watching her choose this with that, some of the pendents are color change so they go with almost anything, a free card if u will. For me, Ill wear anything with anything always on a 16" or 18" chain. For her, she tries to go color with her daily wear & she does pretty well-stevie...

Thanks for the advice! It's just so hard because my taste is so off-kilter. I can find similar pieces, but I don't love them near my e-ring (although that's unfair competition) and my older pieces. For example, here's my go to pieces with the ring, but honestly, my taste leans more to the T&Co that the VCA even though the VCA seems better suited to the ring to my eye.

Beautiful ring! I would start by trying on anything diamond pave, anything with a square-ish motif or straight lines, wedding bands of different widths, solid metal bangles.

Here are a few ideas to get you started. These are all pink gold. I find it easiest to bring in a white metal with a two-toned watch. There are a lot of pretty stainless and rose gold watches out there. Or maybe you could put together a bracelet stack with some simple pieces in white and rose gold.

There is a green ring similar to yours, and it is worn with a stack that includes green stones. You could do something similar with pink stones. Try to link one design element of your ring with the next piece, then an element of that with the next, and so on. Repetition of a design element is what makes a collection cohesive.

One poster even has a beaded bracelet in there that works, I think because it has the diamonds.

Thank you for the complement! Clothing choices can really dictate what type of jewelry is the most complementary. It all depends on personal style because everyone is so different.

Your wife sounds like she has a beautiful jewelry collection! [emoji4]

You could have s bit of fun.

Go into jewellery stores you like and ask a sales assistant whose style you like for suggestions. You might get some great ideas.

At the very least you will get to try on pieces you would never have thought about.

I'd do this when the stores are quiet to get full attention.

Good luck on your hunt.

One thing to note, your taste is likely to evolve over time.
Like others have said, expensive costume jewelry is a waste. But inexpensive fun pieces to have while you build your collection is worthwhile too. I absolutely love layering semi-precious stretchy bead bracelets. Later on, the fun pieces can be your "travel" jewelry.

That being said, I think my jewelry must haves are:

Earrings:
  • Diamond and/or pearl studs (since you like VCA, Alhambra diamond or MOP studs do the trick, too)
  • Gold hoops or dangle earrings (with or without stones)

Pendants/Necklaces
  • Strand of pearls
  • Gold Chain
  • Diamond or South Sea Pearl pendant

Bracelets
  • diamond tennis bracelet
  • Gold link bracelet or bangle
  • Nice jade bangle

Rings
  • One stunning RHR that makes you smile every time you look down

[emoji1] That's exactly what I want: for my earrings to be unique but classic enough to match all of my other jewelry! It's so hard to find something that excites me and is also practical. Finding beautiful earrings in 18k YG that are dainty and beautiful is daunting!
The most exciting pieces are rarely the most practical.

Sounds like she has amazing taste and having custom made jewelry buy one's SO sounds like a dream. Sentimental pieces are the best in my book.

Bah, I think that's part of my issue. I tend not to care for stones on anything outside of rings for myself. They're gorgeous, but don't speak to me for wearing.

I've been hesitant in the past because I think I'm afraid to waste their time, but I can't figure it out unless if I ask and see them for myself. If they're quiet, it sounds like the perfect time.

It definitely has already. I'm still somewhat stuck in my old style with simple, streamlined pieces of my teens, but my ring definitely fits in with my general style evolution (from jeans, tanks, and flip flops to skirts or dresses and heels). I've just not grown into the rest of the jewelry pieces that are in line with that style.

Im impressed with the beautiful jewelry shown & described in these posts. The wife & I cannot afford the names of the premo pieces I see here, so Ive come at the issue from the other way, Ive built very colorful pendents using stones of good quality chosen over a long period of time-I have patience & the knack of winning most of the auctions & selective stone buying to put together jewelry that is usually only seen at shows. What we have is very colorful gemstones simply mounted to show off their colors or uniqueness to the particular stone. I always enjoy watching her pick out her daily wear by the colored stones she chooses at the time-she goes by seasons, holidays or the gem of the month if we have one, Ive posted some of the choices, colors, she uses-steve...

These are all very beautiful! It's admirable that you would go through so much effort to build a beautiful jewelry collection for your wife! 😊

And the beauty of TPF is having the pleasure of seeing pieces that one might not ever have the chance to purchase for him/herself. 🤗
