i was told that if i wanted to upgrade my tiffany ering, i have to do that within 5 yrs from purchase date and i will get a portion of the ring's credit towards the new one. you do not get the setting back because the cost is for the entire ring, setting included, not just the diamond.

The reason I ask this is because I saw a tiffany 6 prong setting on ebay without the diamond... and her explanation is that she kept it because of the upgrade.....I guess that was a bunch of crap...

Oh wow...Tiffany is always thinking how to make MORE money. Does anyone know what is the % (price) that they give back for the original ring if you upgrade it within 5 years?

I think Tiffany will reset your Tiffany diamond ring if you don't like the currect setting anymore... correct me if I am wrong.

Ask for more of an explanation from the seller. There was someone recently who switched out a platinum setting for a yellow gold one at Tiffany and they let her keep her platinum setting.

she didn't give me a percentage of what you get back because she said it depends on the ring and a lot of factors other factors that might make the value go down. i didn't ask about switching settings so not sure about that question.

Very interesting. I'm almost certain you can't switch a setting at Tiffanys. I also thought you get back the entire amount credited to a new ring if you upgrade within 5 years.

I just called 2 tiffany stores here in NYC and heard different things. One employee I spoke with at the 5th Ave store said that you get the current appraisal price for lifetime, whereas the Wall St store said that you get the original purchase price towards the upgrade, but have to upgrade within 5 yrs. But, she added, they would work with you on an upgrade after that. When I got my engagement ring 2 years ago, the SA told me you get the original purchase price for a one time lifetime 2x upgrade.

So, basically, none of the employees really seem to know details of the policy. It is not written in stone and seems to be inconsistent across different stores. I am actually really put off by this. I asked them to have a manager call me back to go over the details. I will let you ladies know as soon as I find out...

Yes, please let us know what you hear! I believe you get the original purchase price towards the upgrade. And I know for a fact that they are flexible on the 5 year period although I wouldn't want to chance it. But I read on another thread about this that there is a hidden cost of 15% of original ring that you also have to pay. In otherwords you get original price less the 15% (IMO-quite a lot) towards the new one.

i don't recall an exact percentage for upgrading, but i DO remember that it was not for the full amount. the "credit" going towards your new ring will not be 100%...it will be less, but how much less, i don't know. i think i was too enamored with my ering to ask those details at that time. besides, the s.a. couldn't give me an evaluation on what the value might be because it will depend on the condition of the ring when you bring it in for the upgrade.
