Tiffany ring broken!

Thanks! I have just written to the customer service an now waiting for reply.

As I said, I usually wear them in different hands, e ring on the right.: I paid an extra to resize the e ring for my right hand when I got married. So it is very miraculous to me that they both broke so badly.

Maybe they were damaged even before the cleaning ---- I just don't know, but if that's the case, it made me feel more uncomfortable about the quality of the rings. I didn't recall anything brutal when I was wearing them during the past three years.

Mabey you should escalate this to management. It's a bit too casual an attitude for one of America's primary diamond retailers.

That's what I thought at first when the SA told me about the damage AFTER the cleaning. Maybe it was so dirty that I hadn't noticed. But later what made it suspicious was that I found THREE instead of just one as she told me. It was quite obvious even without a magnifier.

Yea I'd make this a big thing with not only store management but corporate. If that was not addressed to you prior to cleaning, that gives me pause. And it is too late to insure them, especially to have this covered. These repairs if not covered by Tiffany--as in they're found liable, and I'd press that issue--are solely your responsibility.

I'd escalate this to management above the store. I'd in fact, file a BBB claim and ask for a full investigation, that you want the security footage analyzed because if that was not identified, and they dropped them or banged them in a manner to do the damage, which is possible, that's on them.

It IS entirely possible the damage was done prior and the cleaning uncovered it (were they really dirty?) but damage of this sort is typically pretty obvious before a cleaning and between the two of you, it wouldve come up prior to that.

I usually don't want to deal with customer service if it was not so serious . And also because they are my wedding rings!

I was totally horrified when I woke up one morning and saw the crack in the band. With only a little force I could just tear it apart ! I will update here later when I receive their reply.

At least you saw the crack in the band before you lost your ring. After Ame's explanation of a few things and the fact you don't wear them together I guess it does make some sense that they could've done it... maybe they just hit the right place with the right force at the right time? I don't know, the whole thing is just unfortunate and bizarre. Has Tiffany repaired the rings or sized them previously?

That was going to be my next question--have they been resized.

It's very likely that you could have done something and not noticed in the past, but it's equally plausible, especially given the exchange with the SA, that something was done in the store, without you being told til after the fact. That's why I would want the investigation, and that includes security footage. It's very strange to me, questionable, that they would not have pointed out to you any damage to BOTH rings before cleaning. If there was something going on, and they noticed that before cleaning, anyone with a drop of sense would've immediately come back and said "ma'am, are you aware that there is some damage to these stones?" And that was not done. That is concerning.

Ok, so last week I wrote email to TC and after five days and a phone call this morning I got something from them, quote below
:
"Thank you for contacting us about your concerns. We would be happy to
address your questions and provide you with some tips for caring for
your jewelry.

Even with the calmest of lifestyles, it is very common for stones to be
chipped and/or abraded with normal, daily wear. Full circle diamond
rings in particular can chip very easily due to daily impact damage such
as opening a door knob or steering a driving wheel. With time, dust and
daily wear can unintentionally affect the beauty of diamond jewelry.
Between professional cleanings, Tiffany & Company recommends the
occasional use of a nonabrasive cleaner for diamond jewelry. A mild
solution of six parts water, to one part ammonia may be applied with a
soft bristle brush. Professional cleanings are recommended as often as
once a year. "

This is absolutely ridiculous!!!!

I am going to the store this weekend, and see if they have any better "tips" for me.

Have you had your ring inspected by TCO every 6 months or even every year? That probably will be a factor in whether or not they help you. The problem here is that you left the ring and came back. You didn't wait while the SA checked the ring. So there isn't any proof one way or another of whether the damage happened with every day wear or by the cleaning. I have always had good customer service by TCO and strongly believe if they damaged my ring they'd fix it. I have sent a diamond band in for cleaning and they checked my diamonds when they wrote the work order up in the system while I was there. I think you should take it to an independent trustworthy non-invasive jeweler and have them inspect the ring in front of you and ask them how they think the damage could have happened. If they say it looks like it could only be damaged by jeweler equipment then you have more backing to pursue it. If they say it is everyday wear then I think you should accept that and decide if you'll have it fixed or not. The problem is yes TCO can make mistakes but there is a reason why diamonds need 6 months inspections, because they can get very damaged by every day wear. And if the company is at fault they absolutely should remedy it but if you're at fault you can't expect a company to lose money on the neglect. A second opinion will help narrow this down. Next time, make sure you stay while they check the diamonds. It's the only way to protect yourself.

Thanks for all the replies!
To answer question about inspection, yes, I have them inspected and cleaned every year. No problem from last time.

It was my fault not to wait there while they did the cleaning. However, I asked before I left if it was ok to came back later, and they gave me a definite answer.

Updates: I got my e ring back Saturday and it was fixed perfectly ! I am not sure if they just welded the same band or changed a new one for the diamond but it looks like a brand new ring ! Another clue is that I have engraving inside the band which appears to be smaller than before. But I am more than happy about the work.

I dropped my wedding band to them and they promised to give me a reply by next week.

Great news on your e-ring!
