Gorgeous ring!

Are they aloud to sell a stone without disclosing that it was used?

Many, many stones are "used". Since they are thousands and thousands of years old, though, they shouldn't be thought of as such. Many jewelers buy previously owned stones and often have them re-certified before reselling. When purchasing a diamond that hasn't been recently cut its impossible to know how many previous owners there might be. But like sufergirljen said, it's not like a used car. A diamond's value is not less because it wasn't recently cut.

In Tiffany's case, they take the diamonds out of the settings, inspect them and reset them into new settings.

Huh..that's too bad. I'm a big bargain shopper. If I can get the same item for cheaper, just because someone else used it first, I am so for it. *LOL* About most things anyway.

Diamonds don't lose their value if they are "used/ second hand" , except if they chip, in which case they get re cut in smaller diamonds. Used diamond are recirculating all the time, they have "signatures" from the company that cut them invisible to the human eye.

Scary thought to think my diamond may have belonged to someone else before becoming mine.....and my former one is now on someone else's finger..........*Twilight Zone* music playing!!!

Does anyone know if the upgrade policy applies to Canadian stores as well?

It does... however, I just had an interesting experience... I bought a replacement ring (my original non-Tiffany one was stolen) last October from Yorkdale -was deciding between two, went with the less expensive one, and then while it was being sized changed my mind. My SA (who was lovely but...) said that it was too late now that it was being sized... so I gave up and assumed it was a sign I was being greedy. :p

Fast forward to this year ... I was looking for a celebration ring and he said if I had it sized and wore it a bit (a month) and didn't love it I could come back and they'd make sure I was happy with something else. Which made me wonder... even after it was sized? So I happened to ask about the 2x the original ring policy and they said yes...but when I explained what happened last year they said I could definitely upgrade if I wanted, no 2x required! I think it's b/c really she should have let me even after it was sized (I think up to 30 days at least - I mean what if the fiance some poor guy buys it for doesn't love the style??). So I got to upgrade from 1.26 to 1.5! Not quite 2x but it was close in the end. Still... the policy is there to take advantage of! :)
