I recently got engaged and my fiance purchased a F 1.02 carat classic which I love. I think the stone is sooo bright and shiny. I was told that there was an upgrade policy. I am just curious, what does Tiffany do with the rings they take back? Can I purchase one to make into a pendant? Do the employees get to buy the item? If so, can I work there?

Are they aloud to sell a stone without disclosing that it was used?

Pretty much every jeweler that allows for upgrades does this. They should carefully inspect and polish the stone before resetting it. This is one reason we chose to go secondhand with our purchase. For less than the amount we were planning on spending on a 1- 1.25 ct solitaire, we were able to have to get a Tiffany 3 stone engagement ring that's over 2 cts with VVS diamonds. We paid for an independent appraisal (since the Tiffany warranty does not transfer over) but we also paid the $200 for the Tiffany re-evaluation, which gave us the proper appraisal and changed the serial number into my name so I won't have any problems getting the ring serviced. :graucho:

Because of my ring size, my ring setting had to be completely remade. So, the only thing that is "used" about my ring is the diamonds... you can potentially buy a ring with used diamonds from a trade-in in a new setting anyways, so we're pretty happy with how everything has turned out. (We saved more than half!)

I wouldn't worry about it though. I'm pretty sure your diamond is brand new, since Tiffany's JUST started carrying the SI stones this year... so the odds are your diamond being "recycled" is quite slim. Another way of thinking about the practice is that it is recycling and diamond mining is very environmentally damaging. If the diamonds are in perfectly good condition, at least they aren't going to waste right?

I would think they reset it into a new ring. It's not like a car - if it's perfect it's perfect! :) Since it's something made by nature I wouldn't really consider it "used" - I don't know, mine is from Tiffany's and if they reset my diamond into my brand new band it wouldn't bother me! One less mile of mining they had to do I guess!

I would imagine this is their company's policy.

I would presume so as well. I would also presume that most of Tiffany's US policies hold in their international stores (e.g. upgrades, financing, cleaning, warranties, etc)?

Also, what is the etiquette when you upgrade your ring - does your husband pay the difference, do you, or is it a joint effort? Sorry for the silly questions, but I just don't know these things!
