I've been watching this thread and just wanted to mention that it is possible that Tiffany was commissioned to make Nazi items at the start of the regime. Hitler was big on giving favored insiders jeweled swastikas and other items. There is an (IMO) very strange segment of people who collect nazi items; sadly there IS still a market for them.

well... we can only hope that they're bidding to melt the thing for scrap and to remount the diamond in a less controversial piece of jewelery (although diamonds themselves are getting pretty controversial!)

Anyone who wears a Swastika is not keeping his prejudice to himself. It is a symbol of hate. Would you wear that "fine piece of jewelry?"
