May I ask who your insurance carrier is? You really scored if you found one that will just give you cash back.

Some of us discussed this in anther thread. How all the carriers have changed their policies in the last 5 years to the stand that one MUST replace jewelry, item for item.
They are not giving back money. (Ins Co claim there was a lot of fraud before when they didn't do this.) None of us could find one that just pays back without all the control.
So some of us aren't insuring.

I have a less is more policy on jewelry. What I have is very nice but don't have a ton of stuff. Although DH would disagree with the last part of that statement.

Chubb is still cash back, at least on my policy. But, like the others, due to fraud issues, they no longer will write a freestanding jewelry policy, you have to have another policy for your home or cars for them to do that now.

From what I understand there are companies that WILL write a cash out policy, you just pay significantly more in premiums.

My policy with Chubb is cash back too for lost items

There's always bigger/better/more expensive piece of jewelry out there...I think one should buy what one loves.

My life style doesn't warrant big diamonds or expensive diamond bracelets or necklaces, and I don't care to have them.
For myself, I'm happy with jewelry I can wear everyday, whether it's going to the market, the park or to a party. I have a few favorite rings I've used for years, and some nice gold bracelets, necklaces, and earrings.
Right now I love Tiffany silver and have been buying some of the bracelets, as well as some earrings. Some people may think Tiffany silver is high end, some here may not agree. I buy what I like and feel comfortable wearing.
I also like costume jewelry that I can wear daily, and not having to worry about losing an expensive piece. Also costume jewelry can be a lot of fun, it's not always just about the quality of the jewelry, it's the joy one gets from wearing it.

I bought my core fine jewelry pieces near the beginning of my professional career. I don't need any more. Except maybe a generic versatile yellow gold ring. But the price of gold is too high right now.

Now I enjoy getting less expensive pieces that look expensive. I'm going for bigger pieces, which would be outrageously priced if they were solid gold. So I'm fine with silver, gold plate and other materials if the item looks expensive and if it will last. I'm always taking a risk on gold plate because it may not last. But I figure that into the price.

I love having pieces that will transition an outfit from dull to interesting. I have a lot of solid colored clothing and I haven't warmed up to scarves, so I use bigger jewelry sometimes to make the outfits interesting. It's an accessory now - not an investment or luxury so much.

It was my lifestyle that dictated my taste on jewelry. I started with big ticket items when i was younger. Now that i work for a cooperative, i know its in bad taste to wear expensive items when you face people who can hardly make ends meet. Yet i still satisfy my appetite for jewelry because it makes me happy and takes away my stress:-) so to compromise, i started my silver tiffany jewelry collection. People see me as wearing simple silver but to myself, i know theyre tiffany:-)

I suppose the guilt of buying one big ticket item overwhelms so one indulges in the little purchases. I'm guilty of that sometimes even though I know it makes more sense to buy the best I can afford. Literally, cheap thrill.

Thank you so much for your response!

I think when you start judging what other people spend their money on, it causes hard feelings all around. Just enjoy what you buy and don't be concerned with how others spend their $$.

But with that said, I go back and forth. I don't wear a lot of jewelry and I have pretty much decided I want two more items before I die....a pair of studs 2 carats tcw and a diamond rhr that will probably be 3-5 carats, style yet to be determined for my anniversary in 4 years.

I'm definitely a quality over quantity girl - I have always been more inclined to spend more money on expensive classic pieces than be tempted by little things here and there. As a result, I have a jewellery collection at 30 that is quite substantial and also timeless: I can wear everything in there forever.

There are still a few pieces that I would like to obtain :p (i.e. my pearl double strand) but I am very contented with what I have - there's variety and enough ability to dress things up or down and suit every occasion

I was not interested in designer jewellery before. I wish I was and had found thse forums years earlier, cos I would have tried to buy a Love back in the day when they were so much cheaper!

I have too much silver stuff. If I could have only held back!

I doubt Id get much for my current stuff if I was to sell. I havent tried ebay and those pawn shops give you nada ...

I am currently going through this same dilemma, however- jewellery vs accessories. I have been trying so hard to save up for a cartier love bracelet, it has been my dream for so long. However, I know it is such a crazy amount of money to spend. I am almost at the point of giving up, as there are so many other 'smaller' items that I am lusting over. Eg. A YSL bag, Hermes leather bracelet etc etc. Should I persevere and keep saving?!

I started the year wanting a two-tone watch very badly. Then I got distracted and found other things I wanted more. Now I don't really want the watch anymore.

So it depends. Just because you wanted it for a long time, it doesn't mean you still want it.

I kind of go through the same thing with Balenciaga and LV Alma. I sort of want one of each, but they just aren't worth the money to me. So, no purchase so far.

I never bought the catamaran I wanted either. :shrugs:

Or the motorcyle. Or the parasail.

I read that people tend to view their own spending as understandable and other people's as a waste of money if it's on different items. such as some people spend on jewelry while others will travel or buy expensive houses/cars. even for small purchases some people buy coffee and others think it's a waste of money.

I bought mostly not expensive things and then quit buying for a few years. my budget hasn't changed but I'm taking more time to think before purchasing.

I am exact opposite! I hate spending money on little things because it adds up and I could've bought a statement piece for that price! I'm particularly like this with clothes. I'd rather spend x,xxx on balmain leather pants than the xxx ones from who knows where...
