I came across this thread and I, too, am looking for the quintessential understated work bag. Just wanted to share the ones I've been considering, though they range in price.

In no particular order:
YSL sac du jour
Victoria Beckham
The Row
Valextra
Mark Cross
LV new soft Lockit
Tod's D-cube shopping tote

Others you might consider:
Chloe tote
Reed Krakoff
Coach Borough tote
Celine anything
Balenciaga work
Proenza Schouler
Givenchy
The Trinity (Gucci, LV, Prada)
Chanel

I currently carry a Fendi 2jour and am looking for the next thing that catches my eye. Some great sources for window shopping that you may already be familiar with - Net-a-porter, Barney's, Kirna Zabete, Holt Renfrew, Shopbop, etc.

Good luck in your search. And do share what you end up getting!

I have the same search as OP for work bag, though I'm on a ban still so my target is next year. In my shortlist are Proenza Schouler Keep All and Mulberry Bayswater. With this thread and the other referenced by renee_nyc, I have added Pashli and Mulberry Double Zip Tote. I'm used to heavy bags but this time I may want something light when empty since I carry a lot of stuff.

I have a PS small Keepall & I love that for work. Fits my MacBook Air & many A4 folders. I do also have a medium Pashli but it's not my first choice. The MacBook barely fits, very tight. Mainly I prefer the long straps of the Keepall though. The leather of the Pashli is probably tougher but the Keepall looks great despite quite a lot of use. Both of mine are black FYI.

The Dagne Dover bag is genius. It has absolutely everything you need for a working bag. (And honestly, I wish I had used one in college– perfect for carrying textbooks and laptops to and from the library.)The bag was made for women. And it shows. Cute colors, perfect shape, great length handles, and a proper place for absolutely everything.

There's a slot for a laptop (up to 15"),A slip for an iPad.
Pockets for your wallet and phone.Three spots for pens or lipglosses.
A detachable key strap at the right length for opening doors at ease.

I'm going to add some edgier options - Givenchy Antigona and Celine Edge. They're not in your face, but they are stylish and edgy. I'm also surprised that no one has mentioned the Fendi 2Jours or Peekaboo - two great bags.

I have a Proenza Schouler Small Keepall. It's a good bag, but it wouldn't be my top pick here.

+1 :graucho:

I'm actually in the same boat and have gone through many work bags which I just didn't end up liking. I ideally want to be able to use my work bag on weekends and nights too, effortlessly. I've used the Prada double zip tote (too clunky), Proenza Schouler keep all (looks cheap IMHO), Bal city (too heavy) etc..

Now I'm thinking of the Louis Vuitton Sofia Coppola SC bag in PM size. It's absolutely gorgeous with the most luxurious looking leather and it would be the perfect everyday bag. It's on the pricey side but again you could use it for everything and is such a classic, beautiful bag :)

Hi. Just wondering what makes the PS Keep All look cheap? Is it the construction? Thanks.

I would vote for the Proenza Schouler small Keepall as well as the Mansur Gavriel large tote. I have both and use both for work as well as weekend. The Mansur Gavriel might be a little hard to find right now due to its current "it" bag status. Good luck and can't wait to see on what you decide

Thank you lovely Pfers! So I got really busy at my new job and almost forgot the forum for a while! Phew it is nice to be back here!

So I eventually got two different ones and switch between: Balenciaga's cable shopper by Alexander Wang, I love its lightweight and neat look; Stella McCartney's Falabella Shaggy, again very light bag but can hold a lot of things, and I like how you can just fold it into half and turn it into an oversized evening clutch!
