So he can't do anything till next season?

He should take this time to sort out his issues, whatever those issues are.

Yes'

Sources said Monday that Odom's departure will be immediate and that the Mavericks intend to simply list him as inactive for the rest of the season instead of outright releasing him, leaving open the possibility that they could still trade him after the season in conjunction with the draft. Any team that has Odom on its roster as of June 29 must buy him out by that date for $2.4 million or otherwise accept responsibility for the full $8.2 million that Odom is scheduled to earn in 2012-13.

Even if either side had pushed for a formal release, there is little upside to taking that step now with Odom ineligible to play in the playoffs with another team because he wasn't waived before the March 23 deadline. One source close to the 32-year-old told ESPN.com that the decision sets Odom up to "clear his head and start getting ready for next season" after his career-low numbers and minutes continued to dip as the season wore on.

Wow, so they cut him before the season ended. Is that normal?

No. It happened with AI but that was the only time i remember + a totally different situation. There was tons of drama that season + the Pistons were a mess with a glut of guards who mostly all played the same position and even AI didn't spend the entire season playing like crap. It hit a breaking point very late + after alot of drama between the coach and many players. And AI is no longer in the league anymore so Lamar better watch it.

the team wasn't "pretty much set" anymore than any other team, players come and go. Odom just didn't perform.
He behaved erratically . . . he needs to look at himself before others are blamed. He's a grown azz man.

In 50 games with the Mavs, Odom averaged career-lows of 6.6 points and 4.2 rebounds, and also shot a career-low 35.2 percent from the field and 25.2 percent from three-point range in 20.5 minutes per game.

This. The excuses that get made for him in the media, etc are ridiculous. There are plenty of players on teams much worse than DAL. They don't run away. They don't quit + they definitely don't take random vacations from their teams. I don't think people really get how much the Mavs extended themselves for him. They bent over backwards to make this work. Most other organizations would've fined him + benched him a long time ago. There is a reason Mark Cuban is known as a player's owner.

Considering he was the one who pushed for the trade immediately (whether you believe LAL would trade him later or not), he asked for this + TBH he choked. I'm so disappointed in his complete mental collapse + lack of professionalism on and off the court. This is what he wanted since he tried for a buy out (+ yes i believe he asked for one) so Congrats he got it. He doesn't have to play for the Mavs anymore.

Hopefully, during his time away he gets it together, takes the time to figure out whats really important in his life, + comes back stronger instead of chilling in LA getting photographed.

ETA: And seriously shut up Kobe. You've probably seen 2 DAL games all year. I know that quote is old but it's ridiculous. Kobe has no idea whats going on. He's speaking on Laker Lamar not Lamar in DAL.

I don't know why this irks me so much. I guess i expected better from him.

Aah, reading is fundamental, lol. I totally skimmed through most of the article.

2.5 Mil is what he's guaranteed next year. He still gets the remainder of his 8.9 mill salary from this current contract. So, his money isn't changing.

Again, must be nice to get suspended and still collect millions. Sorry, I have no sympathy for Lamar.

I get that people get the blues, but he acted like a baby from day one. He has been traded before, so what is the big deal. He knows being in the NBA means you might get traded. It's not like he had to leave is wife and children in Los Angeles.

I have some sympathy for him. He may not have handled this situation as well as he could've but it's obvious there's something wrong. He's unhappy, stressed out, the hunger is gone. The Lam Lam we saw last season is a complete 180 from the Lamar we're seeing now. Dude has some issues, I feel for him.

Him collecting millions doesn't mean anything, he's still unhappy.

I cringe when I hear talk of 'buying out' players. Sounds like back in the day during the slave trade:tdown:

Right.

I wonder if they brought in cameras to film their reactions to this or if they will "replay" their reactions to show on the next season of KUWTK. Hopefully he said no and this will stay behind closed doors.

right. I'm so tired of hearing how 'sensitive' he is. who the hell cares, most men who play professional sports are overgrown egotistical babies anyway and a whole lot of them also have abandonment/daddy issues- but they figure out how to do what they are paid to do. People overlook your issues and personal shortcomings when you are the type of player who can makes or break a franchise. Lamar is not and has never been on that level even on his BEST day. I dont know who told him different but he needs to take sometime to figure out how to function as professional athlete before teams are unwillingly to even bother with the extra trouble of constantly figuring whats going though his head

If he did that i will be convinced he really doesn't care all that much about his real career. I'm just waiting for the articles to that are sure to follow after this one that get in depth on how this happened behind the scenes.

Exactly. Amare's brother died mid season. He was killed in a car crash. Amare went to the funeral, took a few games off, came back + played even better than he was before. He was professional. And he could've taken much more time if he wanted. The team wouldn't hesitate to give him that. I appreciate that people handle things differently, but it Lamar knew he was mentally drained from whatever is + was going on in his life then he should've taken the year off. The reason this fails to resonate with me is because i feel like if he was still on LAL he would not be having these effort issues he's having in DAL so it makes me chalk up the real reason for his mental drama being because of the trade + that i have a hard time having sympathy for.

Right.

I have sympsthy too because this isn't him. It is obviously something he can't handle. He might need professional help.
