....but it's an expensive time full of major changes and expenses. Exciting, yes! Scary...also yes. My husband is starting his own business so things will be tight for a bit while everything get worked out. What do YOU do when the jewelry bug hits? How do you make your old pieces feel new again? Do you start and planning for a project or acquisition down the road? Do you start saving up little by little, piggy bank style? I'd love to hear about your experiences. TIA

I'm in the "piggy bank" mode right now - saving little by little. The challenge is not getting impatient and blowing the piggy bank money before you save up for what you originally thought you were saving up for. I have a wish list though and I'm trying to stick to items on that list so I don't get sidetracked. I just started this savings and I'm not sure yet what my goal is. I really want a Tiffany yellow gold ring or bracelet (I don't even own a single yellow gold bracelet so that might win out).

When I "get the itch" I trade unworn jewelry towards something I want. You will take a loss but at least you get something you will wear. Even with a trade plus money...you get rid of unworn jewelry and the upfront money isn't as much.........................

I told my DH after he got me the cartier trinity ring that this will be the last and the next will be after 3 years. Then after 2 mos, I was able to coax him into buying me the pandora silver bracelet then 2 charms followed. Then he bought me a 50 dollar ring from an antique store. And now I am eyeing a diamond ring again and itching to let him buy it for me. I want to know too how I could end this never-ending cravings. I feel bad for my DH and i feel embarrassed for myself. I really think I'm being too much but I just cant help it at all. Its starting to turn into a disease or something.

What a great thread! I am in piggy-bank saving mode but I love having a little wish list of things I think I want, usually from Cartier or VCA (sometimes Tiffany too), then I like to go to Fifth Avenue and try things on, which helps remove some things from the wish list, and, unfortunately, add others!

I like the idea from Saligator above, of resetting things. I need to try this!

Dear lord, I just realized I spelled acquisition wrong! I don't know how that happened, I swear I know how to spell :shame:

Well that's embarrassing. Any way to edit the title of a thread?

I collect pictures and look at them. Then I combine them with pictures of my clothes and see how many things go together well.

Sometimes I play with my own jewelry and try on different outfits to create a different style with the jewelry (casual vs professional vs evening, for example). Sometimes I go shopping and try on different jewelry but I rarely buy anything the first time I try it on. I have to go home and see how many outfits I can make to go with it.

If I become obsessed with a piece, I'll google images and see if there is something else similar, or if there are other pictures of the piece I am interested in. Sometimes there will be ebay pics that show how the item wears over time or how people are layering it or creating looks with it.

If it's expensive and never goes on sale, it's easy to resist.

I do this! plus save piggy bank style- putting money aside from my regular savings towards a specific purchase

I reset things. Some resets can cost less than new pieces - and they feel new as a result!

Excellent idea especially with sentimental pieces!

LOL! Great thread...screw the spelling!

I've decided that I'm going to look at this time as an opportunity to fall back in love with the things I already have and try to rediscover the pieces that get overlooked in favor of my "everyday pieces". My go-to jewelry uniform has been my e-ring, plain WB, pave stacking band, my diamond solitaire pendant, and my little bezel studs. I just cleaned them all and put them away, (with the exception of my e-ring and WB), to give my other pieces a chance to shine. I'm going to try to wear different pieces every day and see what I love and what I can ultimately do without. Then maybe I'll sell some things off down the road to make room for new pieces.

I love the idea of "falling back in love" with the things we have. I think so much of the fun we get from shopping is really about "the thrill of the hunt." It is for me, anyway. Once I finally commit and buy the item about which I was obsessing, it isn't as exciting anymore! Not sure if that makes sense.

Your engagement ring is gorgeous, btw! You have some beautiful pieces! :-)

+1 on Heidi's sentiments on shopping and also about your collection. Those pieces are wonderful!
