It really depends for me. Back in the day, I would switch the bag to the outfit daily; now it probably swings more to outfit knowing what bag is packed. What is new to me is that I stumbled on this work bag that I ADORE . . . so much so that I bought another knowing that it would not last forever. Since I did this, I have been carrying small bags - I mean like wallet, coupons, keys, cell small which I then tuck in my work bag which has a little compartment. I feel so streamlined and it has been a huge help as I take the kids to sporting events right after work since I just grab my little bag and toss it into the diaper bag. Oh, and this summer, I carried a NEON PINK bag in for 60 days while someone very close to me went through chemo and radiation. She loves pink so it was like my little daily reminder to offer up prayers for her recovery. So after that rant, my answer is it depends :p.

Very interesting question! For a normal day, I don't usually decide ahead of time. When I wake up, if I feel like switching to a different bag, I choose a weather appropriate one, and then decide what I want to wear. I love bold colors and frequently don't worry about matching. If I wear a bright yellow polo and jeans, a pink ruby or purple iris bag seems ok to me, for example. Most days the only way strangers who aren't already used to me (lol) will see my bag is if I have to stop for an errand on the way to or from home, and I couldn't care less what strangers at the grocery store or gas station think. I carry my bags for me.

When an occasion calls for a more cohesive look, I have no trouble putting one together properly. I'm not a complete heathen all of the time.

I also love color and like to wear a different one each day, so the order is mood, outfit, earrings, shoes and then bag..don't need to match just need that things 'go' together. No weather concerns here. There's always one or more bags that work...so I often get a second opinion.

I don't know what would happen if I started with my bag

My criteria changed after I started taking public transportation into the city to work and I have to walk to and from the train station.

Now the weather forecast is the major factor in deciding which bag to wear, and I carry patent leather much more often than I did in years past.

Weight has also become an important factor. I have some lovely bags that I now carry infrequently because they are so heavy.

When I am going out or for a special occasion, I will pick the bag to match the clothes. But for every day and work, it is the weather, weight, and functionality that are most important.

Thanks for everyone's replies. Sometimes shopping your closet takes a lot of brain power!! LOL. I have invested in many bags and I try to make sure I use them and make it worth the investment. When I don't, it feels wasteful. That being said, I do end up spending more time than I have picking out a bag each day that fits my criteria. It is really interesting reading how everyone goes about choosing their daily companion! :-)

So what I am learning from this post is that I should only wear cream, black, beige, white or denim clothing and move to Arizona or San Diego. I'm on it!!! LOL.

I have so many bags that I choose my clothes first then go to the "bag room" to pick a bag that matches the vibe/color of my outfit.

I travel for work Monday - Thursday and I must have a large bag to accommodate my laptop and personal items since I can only carry 2 items on the plane. One item has to be my suitcase so my bag for the work week is usually Business Tote/Legacy Tanner/Tumi travel tote sized.

On the weekends it's usually a duffle/cross-body style bag. My clothes are very colorful (pink, orange, yellow, red) and I pick my bag as an accessory to coordinate with my attire.

I think the airlines discriminate against women because our bags count as a carry on. That is so unfair!! LOL.

I am traveling much more for work now and I am finding it a challenge to carry anything but a bigger tote. Then when I get to my destination, I don't want to lug a tote around. I am going to lobby for a handbag exception for ladies!!

dress to shoes...boy did I use to do that.....long ago - just the other day my mom told me to get her a clutch to match her shoes...I was like MOM we don't do that anymore......
heck I have on blue shoes today and a metallic bag - she would think I am nuts....

for me, I just pick out my clothes and then get a bag.....then think about if it is raining or snowing......

I use to take time and be matchy matchy...I don't have time for that anymore....

Oh yeah, the shoes and bag rule. And no white after labor day and only black patent in the summer!! :-). I still can hear my grandmother's rules of dressing like a lady in my head. She would be appalled at my indifference now!!!!

I'd be right there lobbying with you!

I dont like the fact a handbag counts as a carryon. I flew in March for the first time since 2006 and needed a large bag that would fit under the seat and that wouldnt get too dirty. I used my black leather B Mak bag with a large Coach wristlet inside and it worked out well.

Totally agree. I travel often as well, and I get so annoyed that men carry on a full backpack AND a carry-on suitcase. :pout:

It does help to have nice weather 95% of the time

BTW- I see you are in Baltimore, my parents and a lot of my family are from there too. Are you in one of the burbs or the actual city? My mom lived in Dundalk and Rosedale, and my dad lived in Rosedale too. I still have aunts, uncles and cousins all throughout the metro area. Love Little Italy and Fell's Point!
