I didn't see the movie but maybe the producers thought Ottavia (having won before) would have a better shot in the supporting category whereas Taraji would belong in the lead category and there's stiffer competition there.

then they BOTH could have been nominated for the same category, if I recall actresses from the same movie have been nominated in the same category.

Yep, it has happened. Even Jaimie Foxx was up for Best Actor and Supporting Actor the same year.

Taraji running to the damn bathroom over and over alone should have gotten her a nomination.
