I was in an emergency evacuation once: the chemistry floor upstairs had a fire but we didn't know that when the alarms went off. We put our experiments on pause (thinking we would soon be allowed back in) and people filed out. My office was nearby so I grabbed my jacket and bag on the way out as well as a coworker's jacket. It was cold and damp outside so we were glad we had our jackets. We were not allowed back in the building until the next day. I was very glad I took my things with me during the evacuation.

My bag contains several of my asthmatic inhalers so without them Im risking my life more than if i left my bag. Its also contains other medication for me,i never let it out Of my sight ever. Where ever i go my bag goes

Everyone's answers make a lot more sense to me than what the trainer said - and I can imagine how much it would slow down the evacuation to have to have this argument with everyone on their way out!

Once years ago when I worked in another building, in the winter during a bad snowstorm the alarm went off (not a planned drill) and we evacuated. I saw one woman with no coat,no boots and no purse - but she had brought out a thick legal file she was working on at the time! It was a false alarm but I wondered what she would have done if we hadn't been allowed back in.
