I don’t know if taking hormone replacement therapy had anything to do with her breast cancer, but it’s hard to believe that it did not. Since this is an estrogen fueled cancer, and pumping yourself up with estrogen after your body has decided you’re done with all that when you’re older, seems foolhardy. I was told to use estrogen replacement therapy and I did not. In 2009 I discovered I had Uterine cancer and I went to the mayo clinic and they cut it out and said they got it in time. I didn’t need any radiation. I believe that if I had been on estrogen replacement therapy, the cancer would’ve grown quickly and it might’ve been a very different outcome.
I have to say, when she was touting this on television, promoting it like it was the best thing in the world so you could have better sex, I thought it was irresponsible.
It’s true that every woman has a different experience going through menopause. But for me, once I went through it, I felt great. It’s liberating actually. I like this stage in my life a lot. There’s not a whole lot of press about how great it is on the other side of menopause.

Suzanne Sommers promoted bioidentical hormone therapy to counteract hot flashes etc. As per breast cancer.org, Estrogen-only HRT can increase the risk of cancer of the uterus. The progesterone in combination HRT (I think Bioidentical?) helps to prevent this condition. (I lifted this off breastcancer.org — I don’t have independent knowledge of this issue)

i believe SS first had skin cancer, as well as endometrial hyperplasia, in her twenties, then breast cancer. She had surgery and radiation, but she was against the use of chemo. I wonder if she had chemo when she was younger whether that would have made a difference.

Ive had a hysterectomy and am in my mid fifties. My Dr and GYN agreed that I should be on a small version of HRT (basically a mini bc pill) to help with some issues. It’s not for everyone, but I would say consult with your dr. I do tend to think when celebrities promote the next best thing, that they are not the most responsible, but not sure it had much to do with the reoccurrence of her breast cancer. JMO though, and of course I would welcome correction from someone better versed

Yes, progesterone with estrogen is supposed to counteract in some degree the progression of cancer or the possibility of cancer. I’m on bio, identical testosterone for my bone density. It seems to be working. And my doctor said that it would not be a problem in terms of any estrogen linked cancers.
