LOL at piquedame! You're too kind. Your comment made me smile - I am the most unfashionable secretary in existence who hates shopping in real life. Call it a mid-life "change" if you like (I am 50) :D

PS You looking for a hat? :)

PPS This may constitute spamming ? but the awesome grechenscloset led me to an equally brilliant

Another site starring indie designers (eg Zeto, Juju Leroux) is amazing - check it out if you have the time:

Hope it's reliable (as far as customer-service goes) because some of the items there are reasonably-priced and stylish, IMHO.

Values
Mad Imports is a socially responsible company that sells handmade art and accessories from Madagascar and Kenya. Our eclectic products blend the traditional and contemporary design ideas and craftsmanship of our partner artists who use unique textiles and renewable raw materials. The partnership between local and international artists fosters an exchange of ideas, stimulating the design process and resulting in truly special products. The sale of these products enables families to gain economic independence and earn fair compensation for their talent and hard work. Mad Imports is committed to responsible trade, is sweatshop free and is a member of the Fair Trade Federation.

Behind the Scenes

Laurel Brandstetter launched Mad Imports in 2003 as an outgrowth of a Madagascar-based development project started by her relative, James Sellers. With a background in community development, urban planning and volunteer public health work she realized an opportunity to reduce poverty and improve the quality of life in local communities through the sale of Malagasy textiles. Since 2003, Mad Imports’ products have appeared in several fashion publications including Lucky Magazine and the NY Times Sunday Styles. Mad Imports currently retails products through its online store and wholesales products to boutiques and specialty stores around the U.S.

New York based designer, Jamila Hubbard, joined Mad Imports in 2004 as a fashion designer and marketing associate. She studied fashion design at FIDM in San Francisco and FIT in New York. Previously, Jamila worked in Diane Von Furstenberg’s design house and as a designer and rep for Milford Design Studio. She is committed to using her creativity and love for design to make a positive difference in people’s lives beyond the ownership of pretty things. She has designed several pieces for the 2005 Spring/Summer collection, collaboratively with Malagasy designers.
Progress

Mad Imports invests in several sustainable development efforts. Currently, we fund the education of the children of our weaver partners and work closely with the Akany Avoko orphanage to provide educational materials, operational funding and support for special projects. Further, we developed a partnership with a community of women in Kenya, supporting their micro-enterprise and funding community development projects. We continue to work closely with our artisan partners to generate sustainable economic development, provide a venue for artistic expression and to stimulate cross-cultural exchange.
