Hi, my wife's birthday is coming up, and I would like to get her a new bag for work. After a quick look on NAP, and based on my understanding of her taste, a couple of bags jump out: Sac de Jour by YSL and Mulberry's Bayswater, apparently, all Birkin-esque. I would like to ask the ladies here on 1) other similar options, and 2) your opinions if you can choose one among them. Price is of a lesser concern, though would prefer to stay below $5K.

Have a look at

www.justcampagne.com.

Their Panamby bag is absolutely gorgeous, no one will be carrying the same bag....😉
It's made in France and It's available in different colours and combos.....
The brand is known for Its wonderful leathers and designs.

SLP's Sac Du Jour is a very good choice to a B.day present, it's designer-y, sophisticated and versatile. I would favour the SdJ over the Mulberry Bayswater if she has a fashion forward and/or a smart, classic style. The Bayswater might be better if she has a more casual or sporty style.

Have you also checked out Moynart's Ballerine http://moynat.com/en/un-bagage/women/ and Valextra's B-Cube bag http://www.valextra.com/en_gb/b-cube-bag-ocra ?

Ah, some great suggestions. Really appreciate it. After a second look, the Bayswater is definitely casual given its lack of structure. B-cube looks great, though I may need to warm up to the slightly cube-ier profile. Just Campagne has some interesting minimalistic styles, though probably I need to look into them in person first. Sac de Jour seems to be the forerunner at the moment.

I use bays.
Casual vs. professional look really depends on leather type & color, imo.
Probably matters what sort of work one does, also, to suit needs best.

Honestly, I'd suggest asking wife, "Which bag do you like best, if I was considering these for a gift?"
May kill surprise, but will assure a happy lady. And that's what really matters, yes?

Good points.

I am on the same boat with the other ladies, asking her would ensure your success; presenting her with a few options and keep your troubles to a minimum.

If that's not the way you roll, the LV Brea and Marly are of the same style direction and they also have a shoulder carry option. They comes in Epi leather and several colors.
Being a Mulberry gal, I do love the Bays. Bayswater Buckle is a step away from the regular Bays; although, if your special lady has a very refined and classic style and she loves the Birkin, the YSL might be something of a safer bet. If you're not into the idea of a preloved bit of the real magic - as in a second hand Birkin?

I agree. As in colors, I am looking for beige and black. Leather, though non-patent. She's working in a more casual law firm, so no attaché required. But should not be too high profile like a Birkin in case she meets her corporate clients. Though they more often than not meet in a restaurant, so a bit casual poses no issue.

Well, definitely I will go to a store with her to gauge her interests, but I need to learn/know about my options, and where/what to look for first :).

LV Marly seems to be a fine option too. Thanks for that suggestions. Regarding pre-loved items, I have no fundamental objection, just that I don't want to go through the troubles that buying such an item may pose. Too much time :).

How about letting the missus find the one she would like?
If her work environment is professional but laid back, any of the bags mentioned in this thread will fit into it. I don't see how you could go wrong choosing any of them.

We've solved this issue with the simple tradition of me finding the bag I want (I'm into preloved) and then telling the BF about it. I get what I want and he gets off the hook easy. Both winners - he just got me one of my dream bags and now has another 9 mths without gift worries ahead! :partyhat:

You have a lucky wife :).

I agree with the de Jour over the Bayswater, and also like Papertiger's great suggestions but, to add yet something else to consider, have you looked into Celine? I use my cream and white Edge (my signature pic) for work often in the spring and summer and get a lot of compliments. I'm also a lawyer, and love Celine because it isn't (generally) too blingy or flashy. Modern and chic :).

Good luck!
