Stud Size Increase As You Get Older?

I always assume everything is real too, LOL!
I have never been into costume jewelry and unless someone is wearing really obvious costume I assume they were real jewelry like I do.

I always thought they wear bigger studs because the ears grow as we age. Cartilage continues to grow until the day we die, and the earlobes droop from gravity, therefore we have bigger ears in old age and possibly need bigger studs.

There has also been a common misconception among many older women that after a certain age their jewelry will be assumed to be real, so it seems to get bigger and bigger. Granted, it is NOT always the case that an older woman's jewelry will be real (or even that people will think it is), but many older women feel that way.

IMP fake jewelry has to be "believable" for it to pass for real...and that's where some women miss the mark.

Oprah Winfrey wearing 10kt studs .. yes, I just assume they are real because she is a billionaire and can EASILY afford the real thing if she wants them.

The 20-something cashier at the mall making minimum wage wearing the same earrings? I lean more towards 'she just likes the look and is having fun with costume jewelry'... not that it's real or that she's even trying to fool anyone or pass it off as real.. although one never knows, they very well could be.

^ I'm kinda a mixture of both, I don't really care much if people were real or fake i just look at design and if i like that i will look for the real version (unless it is clearly costume, i.e. plastics resins etc.

and IKWYM about the oprah vs. teenagers thing that whole overblinged look on a teen just spells out fake but I don't really care I don't apprecuate that OTT look. It actually looks too try hard and cheap to me.

I actually came to say our ears DON'T grow with age, so why change the size of studs! Cartilage continues to repair itself I guess, but it doesn't "grow" like your fingernails or hair. Otherwise our noses will grow with age, so will our ribs, knees, elbows, joints!

I don't understand why older women wear flashier jewellery. It's almost like they're supposed to, or something. Or like someone earlier said .. entitled. I cannot imagine myself wearing flashy jewellery, even if I can afford it. I guess it boils down to personal preference.

^ maybe its also because with age and genes you loose your figure the older you get (some don't or gain weight but keep the same proportions, plastic surgery etc... but most people do, so they can't wear the tight fitting clothing they did when they were younger, sleeves and hemlines are longer necklines are higher... unless they like the muttony look LOL so to make up for this they turn to jewelery to garner attention?

Also as others stated your budget for jewelery tends to be higher the older you are so while the 25 year old may have an amazing rack, rocking bod and fresh makeup free face the older woman has rock hard headlights only the diamond studs type and honking ungraded e-ring, ridiculous tennis bracelet and anchor pendant.

Or maybe older women are no longer self conscious and decide to do whatever the heck they like, and if they like wearing mind blowing large diamonds they'll do it. We only live once you know.

You nailed it, Lily!
Also life experiences. My dear friend died just as I was looking to buy a new car. I started out with something specific in mind but ended up with a fun, sporty convertible...something I normally would not buy. When I saw the convertible my darling friend came to mind...so I bought it.
You only go around once!!!

Lily25 is correct. Our noses & ears DO grow continuously throughout our lifetime.

I don't assume anything these days......esp the way fakes are made to look so real. But I honestly could care less whether the woman beside me is wearing real studs, rings, etc......

Bottom line is to wear what you love.

I have only had two pairs of studs. The first pair was .40, and the second pair is 1.33. The first pair was bought for easy day activities. The second pair was my everyday, everywhere studs. I'm happy with the size of the second pair, and I have no plans in upgrading. I am 39....Larger diamonds are pretty, but not practical for my thin face.

Or maybe because with aging, the complexion isn't as radiant as before .... and therefore the reliance on larger, more sparkly jewellery?

Funny you should say that. I've heard that old ladies wear big jewels to take away from looking at their faces. yikes

Think it has more to do with they have the money & don't give a dang what someone else says. Especially someone who hasn't lived as long as they have.

Never have been a costume jewelry person. Not a judgement on people that wear it, to each his own.
Don't wear alot of jewelry at one time, even though I have quite a bit.
