kinda a weird ? but someone said to me that it is a bad idea to keep all ur jewels that arent in a safe deposit box in one spot.

they said keep some pieces in ur jewellery box and some in a drawer or something hidden away so if your house is broken into everything wont be taken.

is this a bit extreme? does anyone do this?

I guess it depends where you live but stashing jewelry a bit everywhere sounds like a good idea. When I was living in a foreigner's neighborhood in Seoul,my apartment(no security system) was broken into and all my gold jewelry was stolen. My friend(+her neighbors) who lived in the same neighborhood but in a house with a security system experienced the same thing.

Our house was broken into a few years ago and ALL of my things were stolen except for the few pieces of jewelry that I had hidden in small box in the pocket of one of my pairs of jeans. I am so thankful that I did this....otherwise I would have nothing at all!

I think its a great idea. Two years ago my mother in law's house was broken into and she lost all her gold and diamond jewelry that she had out of her safe deposit box. All her jewelry was in one drawer of the dresser in her master bedroom. QVC has a fold out jewelry organiser that you can put among your folded clothes, sounds like that would work

Thats a pretty good idea. But I would probably take out contents insurance for the house and make sure you update it regularly. Its pretty devastating, getting robbed and at least with insurance, you'd get to start all over with a huge budget and lots of brand new jewellery! :)

we do have my more valuable pieces insured (basically my rings and one diamond pendant) but we also have a clause in our policy to replace up to a certain ammount of misc articles per person. i moved a few pieces into a little pouch in a drawer just to be safe.

seems like a great idea, but it's be very important to keep it documented where each piece is located, no way I'd ever remember!

Huge second on this. And tell someone trusted where your stuff is too! When my grandmother passed away a few years ago, we kept finding jewelry hidden in little places (i.e. inside a teapot, tucked in with sewing materials, etc). I'm pretty sure we still didn't find everything, and no doubt we accidentally disposed of some valuable stuff.

ITA! There was a story in the paper years and years ago about this couple that sold their house.. after the closing, the lady remembered a stash of jewelry she hid in the house, forgot about, and then tried to get it.. Since she longer owned the house, legally she was SOL

I never knew what happened after that, but if it was me, I'd never tell the location.. I'd let them tear that house apart trying to find it.

The problem with hiding jewelry in really good places is it becomes inconvenient when you want to wear a certain piece. It's very easy to get careless and just put it in a place you think is hidden but isn't - thieves know all the common places. This is a good reminder for me to consolidate the pieces i don't wear and find the ones hidden????? and put them in a really secure place.

My grandmother did the same thing! One time my aunt almost threw out an old pair of gloves, but then realized an expensive ring was inside!

My memory isn't good enough to hide things around the house. My mom used to do this with paperwork, and when we were emptying out her house we found a $100k bond tucked in a scarf drawer between scarves.

I keep my jewelry in a safe at home. If they want to work hard enough to pry that thing out of the wall, then the jewelry is theirs.
