Someone wants the nordstrom barcode before they buy?

Sorry is there a little Nordstrom sticker w/ a tiny barcode attached to the tag somewhere; could you read me the number on that sticker? That's the number I actually need to verify w/ the store. I need to be 100% it's Nordstrom's because my wife gets free purse care/repair from them.
She only get that service if she purchased the bag herself from them. Sounds like someone is going to try and return your item to them for a full refund.

nordstroms just puts a their own little sticker on items so that they know it was purchased from nordstroms; they started doing this since a lot of people return things from other stores to nordstrom

They also do this because it's another way of providing documentation in lieu of an actual receipt. It's called a shank and on that barcode shows how the customer paid for it, what they paid for it, and the date and the salesperson who rung it up. So that SA would get dinged on the return, as well, since they're on commission there.

I used to work for Nordstrom.

Yup. In fact, it doesn't matter if you originally paid with a credit card or a check, Nordstrom will give you cash back if you want to. That's why they want to prove it has a shank on it.

I wouldn't do it. IMO. That's your account details on there. If LP (loss prevention) sees a lot of returns on your account, they will watch you and make sure that you're not a frequent customer any longer. But it takes a lot of returns to be spotted like this. But why offer this to a total stranger just to make a sale on eBay? I wouldn't.

Do you think they can get $ back if she paid via cc? OP, did you pay via credit card and is it selling for less than you paid? (I can't imagine it is, or the OP would just return it for a refund...?) Don't give it.

Yes. They will definitely allow you to receive cash back if you paid with a credit card. See my above post. We must have posted at the same time. :p

Yeah but that's why the person is asking. So they know. You can just outright tell the person you are not selling the bag for a loss.

There was a story a while ago on the ebay Shoes Board (Very, very controversial) about a designer pr of shoes that the person bought at a thrift store and she had called Nordies, from the thrift store, to see if they were eligible for a return. Theoretically, she could have bought the shoes for say $15 and taken them back for $170...

i had a gent not too long ago wanted to verify the item was from nordstrom so his wife could alter item free. i asked him to tell me which nordstrom he was going to and i would call that nordstrom sa and give purchase info so alterations could be done for free. the biuyer returned the item.said alterations couldn't be done. weird at the time. but i bet he tried to make a return. there are gangs of people that do it because nordstrom has such good customer service.

That's just crazy of them! They lose the CC fees, and they are subject to chargebacks on the same $$. I say you get back in the same manner you paid...that is reasonable and I never expect more from a store than that...that's just silly and we all end up paying more for it in the long run.

You must have been scratching your head when you worked there wondering who allows this stuff!

They want the number from the Nordstrom sticker on the back of the price tag or stuck on the front of the tag. The one that usually indicates it must be intact for a return.

Barmy: Bolony on this one. My wife? Nine out of 10 times I see "my wife" there's a scam involved. You're right in being suspicious. People abuse Nordies' customer service in dozens of ways. Plus I wouldn't give out ANY info that in any way, shape or form could be connected to my personal info. No way Jose. And ultimately, even if the person wants the info just so the wife can have access to Nordies' services, it's a scam, too, because he did not buy the bag at Nordies, he bought it on e`bay, so you--not him or her--is entitled to the service. Don't do it. Just be as polite as you can about it. You could tell him you contacted Nordies and the SA told you not to do it because (a) it's your info, and (b) the new owner is not entitled to the free service. Next time, he can shop at Nordies.

yes, this is Nordstrom's own sticker and it's called a Shank. It has all info on this Nordstrom barcode which tells the SA when it was purchased, the original payment method, how much they paid and who the original SA was so they can get the return. They do this so the SA gets the appropriate return back to their commission, and for convenience for customers if they "lose" their receipt. It's right there on every single tag on a Nordstrom item.

It was frustrating, mainly because you're pretty much straight commission, so when someone has a return (especially someone that likes to buy for the fun of it and return for whatever reason), you have to accept it, regardless, and it affects your sales/commissions.

As far as CC returns, that's their policy and they have been doing it like that for years. However, it is the only store I know of that will do this, because you're right, typically they will only refund you with the same payment method that was originally used.

However, this did happen with me one time when I went to return something that I used a CC with, but since that particular CC was closed, I asked if I could have cash back or put on another card. They prefer to give you cash back as opposed to putting it on another card. So I guess you never know why.
