Thanks for all your lovely compliments, ladies! I've been using this bag constantly since I got it and I love it.
To answer some of your questions: I was on the fence about the soft-borough style in general, because I LIKED (and still like) the original, "stiffer" versions with the zippers. The zippers make it a unique-looking bag. And I was also both annoyed and amused that they were calling the soft version the "borough" because the soft has fewer compartments. The whole point of calling it The Borough is for NYC's 5 boroughs. I didn't know they suddenly only had 3. :giggles: Plus, I wasn't crazy about the fact that the compartments don't close w/the soft version -- except for the middle compartment. In short, the magnetic closures simply aren't strong enough. You're walking around with an open bag -- very different from the original borough design. (Also, the middle compartment on the soft borough is definitely smaller than the regular/original version.)
All that aside, I loved the grommets. LOVED THEM. Loved this bag in black and tan but went with tan because the grommets really stand out and -- as SAs like to say -- "it's more of a statement piece" (whatever that means).
The middle compartment, as I mentioned, stays nicely closed, so that's where I stash my wallet and keys. The other two compartments are pretty much open, but I don't mind. It's just a different style, in my opinion.
The leather is definitely softer than the original pebbled Boroughs (which are gorgeous)....this particular bag is definitely "slouchier" and more malleable to the touch.
The grommets themselves are gunmetal, but definitely look almost "antique-y" and have sometimes a brass sheen in certain lights...but they're gunmetal. They definitely LOOK gunmetal. I don't know how to describe it, other than they work beautifully with the tan leather!
Hope this answers your questions!![]()
To sum up, I'm thrilled with the bag and adore it. Love the fact that I can wear the strap crossbody-style. A major winner!

I have an original Vermillion Borough in the regular size and a grey/white with stripes mini which I also love but I always felt the 3 zippers was one too many for me so I couldn't wait to seem a soft Borough. I ordered a pilot one in Earth but in all honesty it was simply uneventful so I decided to wait for the finished product. I simply love the leather on the tan grommet one. That I can honestly say. But I punked out and ordered a tan with gold hardware one because the minimal hardware does make it eventful. I plan on getting a Rhyder 33 as my statement bag but a tote works so well for work that the Boroughs are a great choice for me. As for zippers, they do have a long zippers sidewall pocket on each outer wall which is where I'll probably put secure items. I do know side by side as odd as it seems, the original Boroughs hold more. Thanks for all your lovely compliments, ladies! I've been using this bag constantly since I got it and I love it.

What makes it soft is that you don't have the zipper hardware in the center but it still holds it's outside shape. It is a constructed bag but like the Town Tote without zippers it tends to have more give. The pebbled leather is thick and gorgeous on the one with grommets and of high quality. It's just a different bag. Best to try one on.Can I ask how soft it is? I have the original borough and it's a bit stiff, almost like a briefcase.
+1... Never bought a full price Coach before....not that I can't afford one....Its just that my "Cheap" bone in my body won't let me! LMAOI want this one so bad it hurts. Not sure it will ever be in my budget though, so I will live vicariously through y'all.![]()
