I've been trying to do this, too. I've been donating the bags I don't carry to charity or giving them to people I care about who will use them more than I will.

On the whole, it's been easier than I thought it would be. It turns out that I get more pleasure from the idea of them being used and appreciated more than I enjoyed owning the objects myself.

I have one more pretty (and expensive, by my standards) bag to re-home. This is the hardest to part with, as it was my priciest bag. But I really don't use it and my dad's widow is far more likely to use it, so she's going to be getting it when I see her next.
What a lovely and thoughtful gift. I too have given some bags away to people who love them, and it feels great. Believe me you will feel great when you see her carrying it!

The sister of a friend of mine still carries a ZARA bag I gave her years ago (when she had little money), and it's wonderful to see how much pleasure she gets out of it... much more than I ever did! It shows up on all her holiday snaps on Facebook :smile1: Which always puts a big smile on my face too.

That's very nice. You can see your bag now and then, when you give it to her. I do the same with bags I love, but can't carry for whatever reason. I give them to my sister. :smile1:
If I may ask: what bag do you want to give away?

Hi Ludmilla! It's my Lanvin Amalia. I bought it after my dad died about a year and a half ago & I hoped it would cheer me up, but it didn't work out as I'd planned. It's gorgeous but I never use it because I'm afraid of "hurting" it (it's very soft lambskin and not dark enough to hide stains well).
My dad's widow is just starting to become more curious about handbags and taking better care of them since I've talked with her a little about how to care for bags (When I saw how she stored her old Fendi baguette and her old Louis Vuitton bag I cringed!). So it seems appropriate to give it to her. :)

Thanks for your kind words Mary79 :) I love that your friend's sister is enjoying the bag you gave her that much.

This is lovely. Although it's always sad when a handbag doesn't work it is nice to give it to someone we know. :hugs: I hope she enjoys the handbag very much! :smile1:

someone brought up a good point, when they said why do you feel you "need" to purge? If it's because you feel you have too many bags, or someone else said something, or you see others purging, you probably shouldn't. I never purge [EVER] and I have a ridiculous number of bags [like 150 or something like that] I mean RIDICULOUS!! But I genuinely love all of my bags, I don't do impulse buys [I wait at least 3 months before I allow myself to purchase a bag] which does 2 things, first and foremost allows me to catch them on sale instead of paying full price, and secondly, ensures that I truly love the bag and do not just "lust" after it. I buy my bags with forever in mind, because with few exceptions, the value of a bag will depreciate very quickly, so don't look at this as an "investment" you will almost always lose money. It's better off to keep it and get use out of it.

more recently, I have been rethinking my logo / mono bags [Dooney] and have considered scaling down to only a few color schemes, most of them I purchased in my early 20's, I am now almost 40, so I may eventually sell them, or give some of them away, just because I know I will not wear those anymore. but it has nothing to do with the number of bags I have, or the side eye I get from EVERYONE who comes to my place. I LOVE my bags, and honestly rotate thru 2-3 everyday, so get to wear most of them somewhat regularly. I LOVE to have options. and handbags are my only "vice." I don't buy super expensive shoes or clothes, very often. I stick with moderately priced brands [Ralph Lauren, Calvin/Anne Klein, Ann Taylor, etc.] and even off brands.

I however have plenty of storage, so that is not an issue, I could triple my collection, and have room. But I know for some, esp ppl who live in large cities [NYC, etc] storage is a huge issue. So this may be a valid reason to downsize, or if you need to sell to get money for something else [new bag, bills, life, etc.] if storage is an issue, perhaps look into other storage solutions to see if that may help resolve it.

Well this makes me feel much better :). Yes, I was getting the looks, not that it was the sole reason for purging. I do give away stuff all the time so I'm not hoarding , just wanted some new things and figured I should purge if I want new. But I think I'll just sit tight for now, especially after new perspective on things. The ones I have are all precious and I do use them, even if it is sparingly. Thanks for input.!

Side eye...from people in your home...girl, stop! 😵 And you didn't throw them out? (Why are they in your closets???)

I only have about 30 handbags but...I have a shoe room. I WURSH someone inside my four walls would look askance at anything I have. My response would be entertainment for the subdivision and perhaps even the county! LOL!!!!! 😜

I only feel the need to downsize if I have more than I use. If everything gets used, even if some are used less often than others but have a special niche in my collection (for example, my formal events bag), I keep.
