It is very sad. Very strange to read about how violent a reaction she got to the pope incident especially given she was 100% right.

She had that beautiful haunting quality to her voice that gave me chills. Reading about her son’s suicide last year and her obvious heartbreak over it was so sad to me, especially as a mother. I hope she’s at peace now and reunited with her beloved son.

I hope not but I don’t think anyone will be shocked if that turns out to be the case. Seems like she was troubled much of her life. But maybe she had health issues that were never made public.

She had three other kids. The youngest is only 16.

From what I’m seeing on fb, most are speculating it was suicide. She was a tortured soul but the loss of her Son may have tipped her over the edge. We pray that God grants her pained soul eternal peace now…

No matter what the official cause of death, it seems she died of a broken heart over her son's tragic suicide. That is ache, that for a parent, will never go away. Hope they find each other in the afterlife.

She really was, I still remember that "Fight the real enemy!" Ironically she never felt it ruined her career, she never wanted to be a "pop star". She could be more grass roots after that.

It was a self-destructive (career-destructive?) act. During the rehearsals she held up a different photo, one of a Brazilian boy who had been killed by police, and didn’t tear it up. That was what the show’s cast, writers, and producers expected. She deceived the show to make her statement and Lorne Michaels took that as a betrayal. However strongly she felt about the issue, it was unprofessional to use SNL as her platform for shock value. That was what she was banned for. I don’t know what she thought would happen or if she even considered it, it was that important to her. It was certainly a memorable moment from the 90s.
