Hi everyone! Apologies if there is already a thread on this, because I feel like I can't be the only one wondering this--I searched and didn't see one.

I'm planning some international trips for this spring and summer, and since it's been a hot minute since I left the country (nearly 6 years!!), I've been trying to refresh myself on basic travel tips. Of course, being a purse fiend, at the top of my mind is what bag to carry for my adventures.

Pretty much every time I've gone abroad, I've carried a Longchamp Le Pliage like the one shown below. In addition to being durable, versatile, and not too flashy, with a decent capacity for everything you'll need in a day of sightseeing, I also feel like it's very secure in touristy areas because 1) it zips, 2) it's got the top flap that can be fastened too, and 3) it tucks right up under your shoulder. It's this last point I want to talk about, because for me, this feels like the most secure type of bag--you've got your arm holding it close to your body, blocking people's ability to get into it, and with the Le Pliage in particular, you can keep the closed end of the zipper towards the front so you can keep an eye on it. I usually carry mine like it's shown in the picture, with the zipper fully zipped:

However, it seems like in general, crossbodies are recommended in touristy places because they are harder to snatch off your body, plus you can wear them while sitting at a café or other places instead of having to take them off. This is definitely an advantage, but when I think about wearing a crossbody, it seems like unless you've got your hand covering the zipper a lot of the time, it would be easy for someone to just pop their hand in and grab things when you're taking a photo or are otherwise occupied. Also, if it's a bag with a leather strap and someone slashes it, it seems like it would fall right off unless you've got your hand on it, whereas with a shoulder bag that fits right up under your arm, they can cut the strap but your arm would still be holding the bag close to you.

Is there anyone else out there who's like me and prefers shoulder bags to crossbodies when traveling in pickpocket-prone areas? Or are there other advantages of crossbodies for traveling (besides the fact that they're generally smaller and more convenient for other reasons) that I'm missing? This is assuming, of course, that any bag we're talking about would have a zipper, although I also kind of wonder if flap bags can work too.

Disclaimer: this is is not to say one style or the other is wrong--I'm just curious about others' preferences and why it works for you! Honestly, even though I'm getting kind of bored of Le Pliages, I'll probably end up carrying one most if not all the time anyway because I know it works for me lol.

I am actually a big fan of carrying crossbody bags when I travel.
I usually like to be hands free (especially with one hand holding a cell phone lol).

Maybe it's just my posture or the angle of my shoulders, but most shoulder bags don't really sit well on my shoulder (unless it's a thin strap or chain)
It's funny because I really like shoulder bags and have gotten 3 in the past 2 years and use them regularly. I am just more conscious of them and tend to sort of squeeze them in with my arm for more security.

Crossbody bags also handle weight a lot better for me. It's not that I'm particular petite or small-framed but it feels more balanced. I also tend to carry a lot when I travel (as opposed to at home) so I can really feel the weight difference if I use a shoulder bag.
Travel: passport, wallet, water bottle, scarf, hand sanitizer, some kind of SLG to hold change or small things, sunglasses, cell phone charging brick with cable, and cell phone (if I'm not holding it)
Home: cardholder, keys, car fob, cell phone

Pre-Covid I usually use a Longchamp zip crossbody bag, it's very roomy, can fit a lot, understated, sturdy and carefree.
I have not traveled internationally since the pandemic so I have no idea if I'll change it up or stick with the same thing lol.

Same here, just my 2 cents. I do think shoulder bags are a little more chic though ;)

A little cross body is more comfortable. Just keep it in front of you and maybe have your hand on it.
I had pickpocketers trying to get into my cross body but I could feel them doing it. And I somehow didn’t feel when they got into my shoulder bag.
But off course it depends on their skills.

Where are you going?

I think it mostly depends on how you position the bag, it’s closure, etc. like, an open top crossbody worn on someone’s back is going to be much easier to get into than a zipped bag. And a bag worn on your front will be harder for someone to sneakily access as well.

I don’t wear cross bodies often at all, because they emphasize my ample chest wayyyy too much. I will only wear a crossbody if I’m wearing it over a thick stiff layer like a winter coat.

For travel I am like you- I want a shoulder bag that zips and I keep the zipper in my sight. I try to travel with a small enough shoulder bag that I can fit it on my lap at a cafe (not going to hang a bag off the back of my chair where it would be easy for someone to grab it). My Herbag 31 is great because I can zip my phone into the back pocket and everything else is under a hard to undo flap because I use the sangles

I like a small crossbody for travel generally(Fendi mini peekaboo, Gucci Marmont, Hermès Evelyne or Vespa). I like that I can wear it under a coat or blazer and hands-free is helpful if I’m dealing with luggage or making a purchase. I also like that a small crossbody can stay on at an outdoor cafe.
I think your shoulder bag is great if it’s comfortable for you. I admit I get tired of crossbodies, but I find them super practical.

I think everyone has to go with what they are comfortable with.

Part of the benefit to a cross body is that you are hands free if someone engages you. The challenge with a cross body is that, should someone choose to grab it and run, it could cause injury.

They would not likely try to get their hand into the top of the Le Piage but rather grab it at a run or slash the bottom and scoop up the contents. I wouldn’t classify it as a secure bag.

I also agree with the other members about using a crossbody bag for traveling. I have a pacsafe crossbody bag that I use when I travel internationally. It features a security hook, slashguard strap, slashguard material, security clip and zipper clip. It is a simple bag, definitely not a fashion piece but it protects your valuables. I’ve had mine since the 2000s and it’s still good. I have an older version of this one from their website: https://pacsafe.com/collections/bag/products/metrosafe-ls100-anti-theft-crossbody-bag

Whatever bag, you choose make sure that you have extra cash in your pocket and a copy of your ID as well.
Worst case scenario of course.
I agree that a cross bag/messenger bag style is preferred while traveling in iffy area.
Good luck with your travelling plans. How exciting.:flowers:

I’d say email yourself pics of your passport. And of course have them on your phone too so you don’t carry it in the city.
But to be honest Europe is pretty safe as wel as Arab countries. Comparing to big American cities where you can get easily robbed. The safest I always feel is off course Dubai where I leave my designer bag, wallet and phone on a beach and walk away for like hours. Lol. And if you forgot them on a beach, police would knock on your door that day “madame, here’s your bag”. My dad left a bunch of cash at a store and they called us and brought it for us home. Love Dubai. After living there it’s hard to go back to let’s say Chicago lol

Meh, Chicago is getting a bad rep. It is perfectly safe in many, many neighborhoods.
How long did you live in Dubai?
