Hello Ladies and Gents,

Lately I’ve been having some thoughts about selling one of my H bags and I’d really appreciate to get another perspective on the issue.

This is my very first Hermes K32 that I purchased almost a year ago in Paris. The bag is in Gold Togo, retourne, PHW and is a true classic. It is absolutely stunning, but the problem is... it’s been almost a year and I still have not worn it even once. It’s been patiently sitting in its box in my wardrobe, waiting to make an appearance. I’ve been having some reservations about the size. Here are my reasons for and against selling it:

AGAINST:
- this is my first ever Hermes bag, purchased in Paris, which was a truly unforgettable experience. I will never get another “first” Hermes bag
- it is a Hermes, so it will only continue going up in price, so it’s a valuable investment and perhaps I should keep it for a few more years
- although K32 might be a bit too large for my liking at this point in life, I might actually appreciate a larger size if I ever become a mum and will have lots of stuff to carry
- I am a bit scared selling it as I heard so many horror stories about sellers being tricked. But at the same time I am concerned selling it through big consignment companies even more as the buyer might return the bag having damaged it, or worse still, after substituting it for a fake.
- I’m concerned that H might never sell me another bag again if my SA finds out I sold my K32

FOR:
- I have not worn this bag once after buying it almost 12 months ago
- I am not a hoarder by nature and do not like to accumulate things I do not use
- I am 5’5 and the bag looks large for my frame (especially when using the strap, carrying it on my arm is not too bad)
- even though I always thought I’m more a Kelly girl than a Birkin girl, I always use my B30 and C24 and just never stretch out for my K32.

Can you see my dilemma? I am just not sure what to do... Any thoughts?

You have to decide why you're not using it but sometimes it takes me a while. This is why I hate these pointless rules that so-called wardrobe professionals come up with like 'if you don't wear it within a year get rid of it'. An H bag is not a seasonal wonder, what does it matter if you carry it in 4 years time? It sounds like you're either too much in awe of the bag or you just don't like it, just wear it and see. That whole 'just do't reach for it' thing is easily dealt with, reach for it.

On the other hand your for 'keeping it' column doesn't add up too much. It was your fist H bag, but it's not like it was your great-grandmother's, it may be a investment for the future but Gold Ks are usually available and the prices are down pre-loved across the board for H bags. If you're carrying a B or C ad not K then your not the K girl you may think you are or you just don't like Gold or a 32.

BTW, a 32 retourne is not a big bag on a 5'5", I would need the even more classic 35 for all day.

An Hermes Kelly bag is not an “investment” like a securities, bond or real estate. It is just an item that has resale value. Just because an item has resale value does not mean you will make money from it. For example, once a brand new car (which has a lot of resale value) leaves the lot it depreciates in value. There are many stories about people who take a small loss in selling an Hermes Birkin or a Kelly. If you sell through a consigner or reseller they will take a commission. All this to say that you should not view your bag as an “investment” when you factor your decision on whether to keep or sell. As an aside, a gold Kelly 32 is divine.

When I called in an investment, I meant it more down the lines that it’s unlikely to loose its value the longer I keep it. I didn’t mean it in terms of increasing value for resale. So I was more implying that it’s not loosing, say for an argument sake, $10/day each day it’s sitting in my wardrobe.

Thank you for your reply.

Yes, I can’t quite put my finger on it trying to figure out what is wrong with it. It seems like a combination of things. Size being a primary concern. But then again there are secondary matters like the less structured appearance of the bag (being Togo and retourne). It just doesn’t give me that “sharp”, polished look, like my C24 or B30 do. I guess my prime concern with taking it out for a spin is that it will not be brand new anymore (hence if I do decide to sell it, I probably won’t get my money back). I’ve tried it on a few times at home in front of the mirror and it did not make my heart skip a beat, like my C24 did...

Personally, I would make myself try the bag once.
I would put on some jeans, wear a crisp white shirt with a 90 CM scarf worn cowboy style and take that baby out for a spin.
IMO the 32 Kelly is one of the most classic bags there is. I think a Grace Kelly wore 32s and 35s and she was a small woman.

I’ve been on the market for a K28 sellier for a while, so maybe I’ll keep my K32 until I get me K28 sellier (hopefully it will be sometime this year) and then see how I feel wearing the smaller bag. If I find K28 adequate in terms of the size, I could sell K32 knowing it is definitely too big. That way I don’t have to actually wear k32 before I try a smaller size as wearing it once will make it not new anymore for the purpose of resale.

I would sell. I bought a kelly in Paris a few years ago, granted it was not my first and I already had others in the same size. I sold it after 2 years of not using it. I finally realized if I did not want to use it the moment I got it then it needed to go, and I could just buy another bag that I wanted to use right away. No regret from selling, if anything I wa happy to not have to think about the bag any more.

I also believe the resale value is highest if the bag is not used, some buyers will pay a premium for an unused bag, and the more current it is. Another reason to just get rid of it and use the funds to buy the bag you will love.

I think you need to change your mindset here. Don't think of it as an investment. It will be one of the reason you won't use your bag. Give it a try wear it once or twice make an effort to use the bag. Enjoy it so you will know does the size work you or not. You mention that you want to find size 28 what makes you think this size will work for you as well?

Please keep an open mind. Then you will find your answer. HTH

Thank you very much for all your replies and opinions, Ladies!

I think I am leaning towards selling. Would someone be so kind as to point me to the right area on this four. where I can ask selling questions and learn about safe ways of selling a bag? Many thanks in advance.
