Should I create a handbag trading website?

TPF may earn a commission from merchant affiliate
links, including eBay, Amazon, and others

That siunds crazy! Do you happen to know why?
We have a big clothing industry in Peru (look at your labels: some of the finest cotton products are made here, and Alpaca and Vicuña clothing are also made here). A few years ago people started importing used clothing from China and it almost bankrupted our textile industry.
Some used clothing enters the country as donations, but very little of it ends in the hands of people in need: the best pieces are sold in underground markets.

Well I don't know anything about running a business. But as a buyer, or trader, I would definitely be interested. I used to sell on PM and buyers are always asking if the seller would be interested in trading. Some will do it, most won't because they're really trying to cut back their amount of bags, or because it's somewhat risky to do on PM. I do think the interest is out there though.

I knew that. Also cashmere, right? But can’t citizens buy used items? Or is that forbidden as well? I understand it as it is bigger donations that are not allowed. Thank you for taking the time to explain it to me.

thank you! yes, i noticed that too - unfortunately i think some of those people interested in trading are scammers though (and i have heard so many horror stories of trades going wrong), so i feel like we need a place that people who genuinely are interested in trading can go to, on a platform built specifically for that. i appreciate your response

Thanks for your comments! Yeah, that is very true - would need to get authentication right the first time, which is my goal anyways. accidentally sending fakes = unhappy customers even if i were to refund them, which would definitely impact the business, especially in its early days
How would you refund a customer on a trade? If I traded off an authentic bag, received a fake, my bag is long gone and good luck getting it back from a scammer. How would you determine this value in a way that will satisfy the customer & fund it?

Good question! Most likely the value that we would refund would be the value of the bag listed on the website. Also, we would have information on the scammer (as a registered user) - and crack down on them, unlike poshmark/other websites -
But we really would want to spend our effort on getting our authentication right 100% of the time so we don't have to worry about this scenario, rather than spending our effort on satisfying people who were sent fakes and catching scammers. it's way more sustainable and healthy for the business, i think
