Hello everyone! Unfortunately, I am one of those who like things that are unusual, out of the mainstream, not easily accessible, and preferably vintage to all of the above. So, that being said, I've started toying with the idea of acquiring a shooting star Hermes bag. I've searched the threads as well as I can, considering the lack of search engine, and hope to do more once it is back, but my greatest resourse is my friends here. I go into this knowing the restrictions, but given a great asset like our dear Doc and her leather knowledge, coupled with the fact that I probably would never part with a bag for the months it takes to get spa'd, I'm OK with Hermes never servicing it. So, in my best Carrie Bradshaw.....:sos:

Hermes Shooting Stars...Insanity, or just shooting for the stars?

Yes, I think I am....they seem to pop up every now and then. Bad idea?

I don't think it is a bad idea, but they do not appear very often. Given some of the restrictions vis a vis servicing, I would try to find one in a leather that is sturdy and certainly one that is already in good condition.

I would say that if this is your only bag (shooting star) then it could be a little risky. Many have suggested that a shooting star bag is for collectors and/or peeps that have seveal bags already.

^^ I totally agree.

And I have confirmed with my H store time and again, shooting star birkins will NOT be accepted for servicing.

I've learned the hard way, H is like Pringles, you can't have just one, so no, I don't see it as my only bag, or even an every day bag, but I would like to have one. Just as when I was in love with LV, my speedy had to be French Company, not just any old speedy. My Epi had to be bi-colored and discontinued. I'm just odd that way. If I can find a hard way to do something, odds are I'll try that first. Go figure!

Thanks for sharing your insight. As usual, it is priceless and very much appreciated!!

If I were you, I would seek something unusual in terms of leather/colour combo and not the stamp. That is nothing special really. ESPECIALLY if it's likely to be your one and only H bag. I don't see the allure of a shooting star bag.

I understand your appreciation of unique, but as Hello states, it is just another stamp and at the end of the day, you want something you can wear/use without worries. It is a crap shoot as to whether or not the boutiques in US will service. Obviously, in Singapore they have made a decision and are sticking with it.

Why don't you try to get a discontinued color in a discontinued leather like Vache Ardennes? Heck, if you want a challenge, there is one for you! It's my all time fav...super sturdy and hard as nails. They hold up really well. Were very popular in the mid-to-late 1990s? If I ever saw one, I would snatch it up right away. The stamps are not very meaningful IMHO.

I agree. A rare or discontinued leather or color is much more sought after in the H community (is that us?) than a shooting star. I think what you are "into" is rarity. A shooting star bag is not that rare. What makes an Hermes bag rare is the leather/color/hardware combo. This is the point of the GRAIL bag in the first place.

Breenamom, I "think" I know the feeling of wanting the special and unusual in my field(s) of interest. I've sought out similar things...for example, I started seeking Thalassa about the time I heard it was discontinued and this only heightened my desire to find a bag in this color which I felt to be special and beautiful. And I continued my quest until my tenacity was rewarded.

But my point is, what is the difference in "special" and "unusual??"

If you feel the shooting star is "special" then, certainly, it would seem to definitely be something to pursue. But, if it is merely unusual or even hard to find, then....I don't know. For me, that wouldn't be enough of a reason.

Special wins out, "unusual" doesn't in my way of thinking. But, my way is not what is important here....it's your way of thinking, that is important.

As for lack of servicing, suppose the bag really did have a problem. Suppose a thread(s) came loose. Are you going to sew it back, yourself? Suppose a corner got scuffed, pretty badly. Are you going to refurbish it, yourself?

The bags are pretty hardy, for sure, but the unexpected can happen.

At the end of the day, tho, it's your Hermes:yes::tup: and your decision.

Thanks for understanding, Isus. I think part of the attraction to me, if my understanding of the threads here is correct, is that the craftsman chose the particular materials with himself or a family member in mind, not an anonymous consumer. I like the romance of that, the perceived (perhaps naive?) extra-special and personal aspect of it. As far as the condition of the bag, I'm too picky to buy one just based on the star. It would have to pass a few strict QC conditions for me to BIN. Including the wrath of the auth. thread....Does that make sense or even realistic?
