Shakira Opens Up About Pregnancy and Motherhood, Shares Mission to Help Moms in Poverty

Shakira and partner Gerard Pique are using their celebrity platform, as well as the birth of their second child, to do some good.
The proud parents have teamed up with UNICEF to throw a "World Baby Shower" to benefit vulnerable children, and in a new blog post, the Colombian beauty shares why it was so important for her and Gerard to give back, noting how lucky she was to have every available resource during her pregnancy—a luxury which many mothers are never afforded.
"As the time of my son's birth grew closer, I was full of anticipation," Shakira writes, referencing her first pregnancy with Milan. "Nonetheless, with every gift that was given to my son through the generosity of family or friends, I thought of mothers who couldn't count on even the most basic resources for their children in those first crucial stages of life, who often don't have access to vaccines, clean water, or even a proper birthing environment. For these mothers, having a baby, however happy an event, is often a risk to their own health or their newborn's."
The singer continues, sharing how she and Pique partnered with UNICEF "to throw a World Baby Shower that asked for gifts to be sent to places where they are not only appreciated, but where they can actually save lives," adding the positive response to their efforts were "overwhelming and emotional."
"With our second son, we wanted to take it one step further, and invite other parents to host their own showers that help benefit other babies and mothers living in extreme poverty," the singer says. "The feeling of sharing a happy event with others by helping those less fortunate is profoundly rewarding, and made the birth of our own child that much more sweet."
Last month, following the birth of son Sasha, the happy couple debuted the first photo of their newborn while encouraging fans to donate to the charity.
"This time around, during my second pregnancy, like many mothers, I felt more confident," she says. "The questions that kept me up at night with my first now seem more manageable and I have more perspective about their importance in the bigger picture.
"What I never want to forget, or stop questioning, is why every child and mother doesn't enjoy that same sense of security," she adds. "My hope is that by the time my sons are adults, they can look back and see how even small efforts can have a big impact when multiplied—and that they take the time to tackle the big questions of their time too."

Family goals: Shakira, sons support Gerard Piqué

Shakira and sons came out to support Gerard Piqué on Saturday.
Her partner, the handsome soccer star who plays for Barcelona, had a home match against Valencia.
The boys, 2-year-old Milan and 2-month-old Sasha, wore matching jerseys in support of their father — each with their own name on the back.
The proud father was seen clutching his adorable sons shortly before the match began, while Shakira tended to the boys during the match.
Despite caring for the tiny tot and newborn, the 38-year-old “Beautiful Liar” singer looked refreshed. Shakira appeared not to be wearing any makeup and let her wavy blond tresses fall on her shoulders.
Could more children be on the horizon?
She told Latina magazine back in March 2014 that she’s planning to have many more. “I would love to have eight or nine kids with Gerard — my own futbol team.”

Shakira Raising Her Sons to Be ''Modern'' Day Men, Says She and Partner Gerard Piqué ''Share All Parenting Responsibilities''

While Shakira and longtime partner Gerard Piqué may not be married, the couple is incredibly committed to raising their two children together.
"In Spain, parents speak to their children as equals, and I feel that the children respond in turn," the 38-year-old mother of sons Milan and Sasha told the April 2015 issue of Parents Latina magazine."But in all three cultures, parents are attentive to their children. Their dad [Gerard Piqué] and I both grew up in very close-knit families, and that has made us openly affectionate parents."
Currently, Shakira and her man reside in Spain, where soccer stud Piqué plays as a centre-back for FC Barcelona and the Spain national team; however, Shakira is of Colombian decent and is also a notable celeb in the United States.
As a result, the proud parents are raising multicultural, bilingual children who have a unique perspective on the world.
"I would have to say Spanish, since I'm the one he spends the most time with and it's my first language," the Colombian beauty revealed when asked which language two-year-old Milan is picking up faster. "I talk to him as much as possible—it serves as bonding time and helps his language-comprehension skills."
The UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador also told the publication how she's hoping to raise modern-day men with progressive values.
"Growing up with a working mom is a start. I also think their dad is a good example of a modern man to emulate," she said. "Gerard and I pretty much share all parenting responsibilities, although I'm definitely the disciplinarian."
As for how being a mom has helped Shakira learn to delegate?
"Becoming a mom forced me to re-prioritize and make room for the things that are most important, while recognizing that there are things I can let go of and the world won't crumble around me."
And rest assured fans, she has no plans to stop making music.
"I really enjoy working on Spanish albums, but I always joke that Milan was easier to give birth to than my last album [2014's Shakira]!" she admitted. "I apply the same amount of dedication to being a mom as I do to my music—I guess you could say music was my first baby."
