How do you become one? I've always wanted to make my own gold jewelry...I live in Ottawa and would be interested in taking lessons..but I don't even know where to look???

I contacted a local goldsmith in my area to custom make a piece of jewellery and we started talking gemstones and things in the trade, after the custom piece I designed was done he said he had 3 other people who saw my ring want the exact same thing. so we made a deal- if I designed for him, he would teach me the basics of becoming a goldsmith

Can you pick his brain and ask him how someone would go about it without the help of a local goldsmith? Is there a school or something that I can go to?
