I am pretty new to luxury bags. I was wondering what online stores people really trust for buying authentic secondhand bags. Every site seems to have a reputation for selling fakes. Recently I was looking at Tradesy because they seem to have more bags than anyone else, but they seem to be little better than eBay (or worse, since they only provide store credit for returns?).

Is there any place trustworthy to buy from, or must I pay to get any bag I buy authenticated? Would like to avoid that.
Thanks!

I'd recommend Ann's Fabulous Finds, they are trustworthy. And, have a look through the rest of the threads on this part of the forum. It will give you a good sense of which sellers people frequently have issues with. Also, while receiving authentic items is of utmost importance, also consider how a seller handles other issues that may arise. How accurate are the descriptions regarding condition, etc..? How well do they deal with returns? Are they responsive regarding questions and concerns? Good luck!

You may want to review this thread about TheRealReal selling fakes . I have not had any firsthand experience with them, but something to be aware of. Anything is possible when resellers are getting greedy.

note: if you are new to luxury bag purchases, reputable paid authentication and purchase via PayPal confirmed with VC (NOT PP friends and family or Venmo or a no fee service) is a small price to pay for peace of mind.

I have had good experiences as a buyer from Fashionphile. Ann’s fabulous finds and yoogis closet, but prices have skyrocketed, and you should always do your own due diligence

I do not recommend the realreal for bags from an authentication perspective and from their no return policy. I also am somewhat wary of rebag, but I believe other TPFers may feel differently.

i have also been happy with bargains from brandjfa, Brandoff and some other Japanese resellers are on the Hermes subforum recommended reseller list (yu can find it with a quick search) But, pls note, if you are in the US, items bought from other countries have additional fees: I seem to recall 10% customs and your applicable state sales tax. Yu should double check this to be safe.

yu can also do paid authentication with @bababebi before purchase.

I would personally never buy from Instagram, Facebook, Tradesy etc etc. JMO, YMMV

I am considering buying some luxury bags from resale sites (I’ve always bought retail in the past) so this is very helpful information.

When you mention paying by PayPal with “VC” what does “VC” refer to?

Also, does @bababebi authenticate various luxury brands or only Hermes? If you’re asking for authentication from him/her before a purchase they would be authenticating just from photos?

Sorry for all of the questions but I’m very interested in this topic as I’ve never purchased luxury bags in this manner before and I don’t want to get scammed. Thank you!

paypal with credit card (verified buyer). all over this forum are warnings never to pay with wire transfer; PP F&F, Venmo and that ilk etc. . . You can check ebay shopping tips here

You can contact @bababebi directly. https://bababebi.com/

There is a list of recommended resellers on the H subforum https://forum.purseblog.com/threads/reference-master-list-of-brick-and-mortar-com-resellers.42499/ (caveat on whether it is up to date; so pls do your own due diligence) right above it is the thread how to get a first birkin
(and also possibly chanel and bottega , I don’t recall, but you can go to chanel shopping subforum, and try to look here : https://forum.purseblog.com/threads...-finds-here-no-chatting-please.940133/page-17 or here : https://forum.purseblog.com/threads/chanel-resellers-consignment-recommendations-only.637137/), and @averagejoe kindly volunteers his expertise to authenticate by request on authenticate Dior TPF thread (for any TPF authenticAtion request, it must be a live auction and submitted on thread in a format provided in the beginning of each thread) https://forum.purseblog.com/threads/authenticate-this-dior.924508/page-845

of course, I can only speak as to my own experience with resellers. There are threads with TPFers chiming in re their own experience with resellers in the US (like fashionphile) as well as a thread specifically for Japanese resellers In the H subforum.
there is even a general ebay thread here: https://forum.purseblog.com/threads/secondhand-online-recommendations.1046352/, and https://forum.purseblog.com/threads/ebay-safety-tips-for-buying-selling.117551/, and here,
They are found easily via the search button (magnifying glass icon) on the upper right of your screen.
finally, many TPfers share their tips and advice.

HTH!

@880 wow, thanks very much for providing such a detailed reply. I have been trying to read up on threads about resellers on TPF but sometimes it's hard to make a call about them as some posters will say that they have only had great experiences and then others will say the opposite all about the same reseller. So, at times its seems like it may be a crapshoot.

I will review all of these helpful threads - thanks so much for taking the time to write this out for me. I appreciate it! :ty:

I just used Realreal and it seems like I got a fake Hermes briefcase.
I am trying to see if consulting and paying for bababebi's services makes sense since it would be dumb waste of money if it turned out to be a fake.

What authenticator have you used?
Is there a thread here on this topic?

Not only is it difficult to know the authenticity of the seller and the authenticity of the product but also the authenticity of the authenticator. Does that make sense?

Its great having the knowledge and experience of the members here but when it comes to evaluation for resale and purchase of authentic products we need that insurance.

We are currently in the General Shopping a subforum. There are multiple threads devoted to this topic within subforums classified by brand name, for example. hermes shopping, etc. etc.

I strongly recommend authentication by reputable third party (either paid or TPF volunteer) prior to purchase and payment via fee based service like PayPal. The authentication fee and 3% fee is a small price to pay for increased peace of mind. However, nothing is risk free except as @jellyv points out below: purchase from the boutique.

re seller: I personally tend to buy from boutique; fashionphile (though some members have had mixed experiences); Ann’s Fabulous Finds; Yoogis Closet; a few resellers in Japan; @docride for specialty heritage leather Hermes (box, vache natural, barenia) and, a few reputable brick and mortar stores. i can only speak as to my personal experience As a buyer though.

re product authentication:
researching the seller, the retail platform and authentication is part of due diligence. Many of us have learned a great deal by reading this forum (and using the search button  (for narrowest results, use the magnifying glass on the upper right to search within each subforum) Usually, you will find a thread where someone has done part of the work, and you can benefit from that experience.

Each subforum used to have a volunteer authenticity thread staffed by experienced TPFers. Note: only TPFers with the color coded label authenticator under their avatars are authorized to authenticate. If you follow this path, your post will be answered faster if you follow the format listed in the rules in each thread.

chanel: (Not sure that chanel has one currently, but some reliable members used to recommend Etinceler. I personally would not trust authentication services from a seller platform. https://forum.purseblog.com/threads/authenticate4u-vs-zeko.1040491/

hermes: Many members have relied on Hermes subforum thread or @bababebi for paid authentication .

dior: @averagejoe is extremely knowledgeable and generous with his time on the Dior subforum.

Bottega Veneta: There are also very knowledgeable TPFers on Bottega thread.

Other: I am not as familiar with contemporary designer threads, but I know the Rebbeca Minkoff threads seem quite comprehensive.

HTH

If authenticators with excellent reputations aren't acceptable, the simple and foolproof answer is to buy new, directly from the brand's boutique. Everything else has some degree of risk and demands some level of trust.

I agree but there is the other side of it as well. We've inherited a collection which we are trying to evaluate and sell.
Trying to verify authenticity for buyers assurance and to make for a more pain free transaction. There is a market for second hand which of course carries some risk but it can be done safely.

Believe me I've been searching for information but it does seem to run around in circles. Thanks for everyone's help trying to get this information.
