Scared to wear my new diamond ring

I work in a medical setting, washing my hands up to fifty times a day, some days. I initially chose an 18ct white gold wedding set. With in months of getting married, I was faced with having to get my wedding ring re-rhodium plated due to the hand washing solutions I used at work. My Wedding ring had turned a light yellow colour. My husband thankfully noticed had the difference in the colour between my Engagement and Wedding rings, and felt that long term it would be better to change them to Platinum. That was fourteen years ago. It was the best decision we could have made. My ring is as good as new. I agree with what Ame said. What ever you decide, enjoy x

Gold is relatively easily damaged and/or discolored by chemicals, there is a story about a lawsuit in a diamond book in which the lady accidentally poured clorox into her ultrasonic which then dissolved the gold in its entirety and she sued the cleaning lady for stealing her ring while the diamonds were poured down the drain. This is supposedly a true story from a well known diamond expert and during the lawsuit they found the stones in the drain. I have had discussions with gold experts about whether this is possible and there is some disagreement, however, the point is it is the gold that I would be concerned about. Diamonds are actually the hardiest of all gemstones as far as chemicals go, you can do a lot to them without damaging them. HRD uses alcohol and boiling for each diamond going in for grading. That said call me paranoid I would worry about a gorgeous ring getting damaged but if you wear gloves you are probably ok or to be safe wear them outside work.
