I own a black one and I am planning to pass it to my son some day. It goes with everything and I wear NATO bands and switch them around and that adds lots of color.
I vote for the black.

I probably should have set this thread up with a poll. I was pretty much set on the black because it felt more like what he wanted until... He started looking at videos of the two watches and now we're back to square one.

I had this exact same problem years ago when I was buying this watch.. for myself :)
My husband wanted me to get the black, but I insisted on the green, arguments broke out right there at the counter. Best decision ever!
Years later I ended up getting the black one as well, but it just never stood out like the green one. Even my husband agreed that the green one is very eye catching.
My husband sometimes wears the green one, it never clashes with anything he wears.
Being such an expensive item, your husband really needs to buy what he actually wants.
If his heart is set on black then he has to get the black, otherwise his never going to be happy with the purchase.

Thanks for chiming in! I'm glad to hear someone had the exact same dilemma. I'm starting to get the sense that he likes both of them equally, and that he would eventually end up owning both as well...

To be honest, I much prefer the previous Submariner models, I think the wider "fat horns" that Rolex indtroduced on their sportmodels over the past 5-7 years is a mistake. I personally own the new GMT IIC, but am getting tired of it due to the dimensions and also the "RolexRolexRolex" on the inside of the dail. In my mind, it makes it look cheep. As for the ceramic bezel, it looks nice, but I do not think it matches the true idea and tradition of the Sub. It is build to be a tool watch, a cool tough watch that is durable and that you can go on adventures with without needing to baby it. The ceramic makes it look more polished, which I personally think goes against it's herritage.

I also own the previous green Sub, which I LOVE!!! The good thing about the old green sub is that you can change the bezel from green to black (I am currently using the black), it takes your friendly Rolex AD only a few minutes and they do it for free.

If you look at it from an investment point of view, the old green sub has already gone up in value a lot and my take is that it will increase in value over the years to come. Collectors really like it and much prefer it to the new version. As an investment, I am very sure that the old green Sub will be a much better choice.

My best advice is thus to buy the older green Sub plus an extra black bezel and you are good to go on all levels.

I would buy what he loves rather than for rarety and potential investment value. It's very difficult to predict future collect ability and honestly the sub line is so mass produced that it probably won't skyrocket in value regardless of what color you get.

I also bought my husband a sub as a wedding gift. He liked the older model no date version in black bc the face is cleaner and its truer to what the original dive watch was. He preferred that to some rarer rolexes including the stainless steel Daytona so that's what he got. The bonus is that black looks great w a tuxedo !

I totally agree. He should buy what he loves and forget trying to predict what it might be worth in the future.

I personally like the black better (maybe because I have one ;)). I think it is classic and understated.

I'm on the hunt, checking prices in Asia to see how they fare against the US. I've heard that the green one is not readily available in Asia so if the price is right for the black in Asia, I may just get one there.

At this point, I'm thinking that he'll eventually end up owning both. Now, it's more a matter of deciding which one is his first.

Thank you everyone for being so insightful though! I know I've been very back and forth between the colors. Hopefully I'll be able to give an update with our final decision (and pictures!) soon :smile1:

The green one is more expensive, I think the green one is more beautiful. If I were you, I will prefer the black one. Because I think the green one looks much too attractive for me.

The black one is a classic and understated Rolex suitable for all occasions and as it is the one that your DF prefers I would advise him to go for that one and not worry about resale as all Rolex's hold up pretty well .
I bought the black one for my sons eighteenth birthday present ,he loves it and wears it all the time despite having other watches .

My brother has the green one which is his first and only Rolex. It's much more subtle in real life and goes with everything he wears. When he first told me that he was planning on getting a green watch, I thought he was mad but it looks beautiful and in my opinion is much more exciting and individual than a black watch (which of course also look gorgeous too). I would go for the green one because it looks fantastic without being too garish and in-your-face. Also, given that Rolex's colour is green and that there are very few/no other green watches on the market, it makes it that little more special and unique to the brand. Either watch would make a wonderful present and I'm sure your husband would be thrilled with either. Good luck deciding!

I just wanted to give a quick update - we ended up going with the green one because he didn't like that 'everyone and their mother' had a black submariner. He's really happy with it and has received a lot of compliments because it is more eye-catching than the black one. Thanks again for everyone who weighed in! I have photos on my phone but am waiting for the app to be restored before I upload pictures.

I think you chose the perfect watch & I know if my DH was to buy another Rolex he would choose the green sub its such a stunning green colour.
