I am looking for a Rolex watch for my husband. I was looking on ebay, and mostly everyone who sell them is NOT an authorized dealer. We are looking for a brand new watch. Is it safe to buy Rolex on ebay? Will Rolex honor the warranty in case something happens?

Hey!
I don't know much about Rolexes but a lot about ebay, and my answer would be: Doubtful... I'd be really wary, not only of the authenticity but I doubt the warranty would be any good if not an authorized dealer.

there are some good sellers on ebay with authentic Rolex. If you are sure of authenticity by feedback and reputation, then I say go for it. One thing is to make sure that all the parts are Rolex factory and not aftermarket. As long as everything is original Rolex, Rolex will always take in for service. You may need to pay though as I'm not sure about honoring a warranty.

If you purchase a Rolex from a company who is not an AD then Rolex will not honor any warranty and you will be at the mercy of the company you purchased the watch from should something ever happen to it.. Also the resale value is alot lower when it doesnt come from an AD

How well do you know Rolexes?
Can you tell if it has after-market parts, how old it is, and if the watch is authentic?

Rolex will not honor a non-AD warrentee (so be prepaired for major repair bills), and they will not work on a watch that is a "franken-watch" (one with after-market parts)

Also, there are a LOT of fake Rolexes out there. The general rule of thumb is: "You don't buy the watch, you buy the dealer."

In short, buying Rolex from a non-Authorized Dealer is a gamble. (JomasShops and their ilk are not ADs!)
How dangerously do you like to live?

really stupid question: what is after-market parts?

i purchased one rolex from non-AD before, but it is a public traded company in my country and reputable. i also went to the store myself to try it, although i dont know too much about rolex. i wouldnt purchase from ebay unseen though.

I recently bought my Rolex on Ebay but I really did my homework on the specific watch and the specific seller. Beware are there are a TON of fakes and a TON or Rolexes with aftermarket additions. A telltale sign on aftermarket is a very large diamond bezel or the crystal listed as acrylic. The new Rolexes have sapphire crystals........ Also make sure that the watch is listed as water resistant.....that is another dead giveaway of something aftermarket on the watch (potentially).

I gotta' tell you, Rolex is one of the few I would NOT buy on the bay, simply because of the incredible amount of knock-offs. In fact, I have seen knock-offs SO GOOD that they even have fake serial #'s inscribed, and have "ROLEX" on the movements.

With the economy the way it is, you can get 15-30% off any Rolex other than a Daytona, and buy over state lines from an AD (authorized Dealer) to save tax; another 5-10% right there :)

Other than that, Ebay can be GREAT for watches. Just do your homework and buy from high volume, 99.9%+ feedback sellers...

I actually bought mine from a non-AD. Rolex Canada serviced my watch for free (time adjustment and adjustment of bracelet), and didn't require any of the paperwork even after I offered to bring it in to show them. :yahoo:

With that being said, there IS an incredible amount of fake Rolex out there. There are a lot of ADs that are willing to give out very good discounts just to walk ins.

We are looking at Daytona stainles with gold something like this

If the sellers are not authorized dealder, how and where are they getting their Rolex from???
I know know that much about Rolexes, but how will this watch hold its value?

OK... 1st, non-authorized dealers get them in many ways. Traditionally they import them from overseas where they are obtained for less $$, or they buy stock from stores/dealers going out of business.

They could also be AD's selling them below the allowed-by-Rolex price; something many dealers do n Ebay to move product and still make a profit.

The two tone Daytona is the most expensive but holds its value the worst, just FYI.

Also, I would want to know if it was a 2008/2009/2010 model as the price difference could be substantial and the dealer may NOT pass it on to you as they should. For example, if they are selling a NEW old stock piece from 2008, they may have paid 25% less than this years model, but are using the 2010 pricing scheme in determining the value; not cool.

Honestly, and I mean no disrespect with this statement, you simply do not have enough knowedge to warrant buying this from Ebay.

Given the cost, and the nominal savings, just go to a store this time. You will be happier. Good luck!
