I am in the process of making one of my rare jewellery purchases.

I usually don't buy and wear much jewellery but what I get has to be something I like wearing daily (at the moment at least) budget does not allow for 'going out' purchases, especially as I never go out. I have a couple of amazing H Stern rings in mind

so my question:
can you wear a ring with a stone on top (if that makes sense) - engagement ring style - wear daily and be comfy with it. It wouldn't be a big diamond but an aquamarine. any experiences whether they break easily?

or is it better to wear a flat ring that has diamonds 'in it'?

I would post pics of the rings I have in mind but can't find any online.

You mean solitaire rings with gem stone other than diamond right?

I recently got this blue topaz ring for everyday wear and it is very comfy. I don't work construction of course, but I'm a clumsy person and I get my hands banged on surfaces often, but I never had a stone chipped.

I keep the diamond cluster rings (is this the correct word to describe it?) for dinners.

I wear my e-ring almost daily. I so far have had no issues, but an Aqua I don't know about for daily wear. Those are very soft and very easily scratched.

for daily wear I would stick to stones that are above 7.5 on the moh scale. so Sapphire, Spinel, diamond, chrysoberyl.
sapphire and spinel are easy to find in any colours from white, blue, purple, yellows, oranges, reds.
chrysoberyl- come sin green, yellowish- almost neon colour when you find a good one.
and diamond- the hardest of all gemstones :)
hopefully others can chime in with other suggestions, but aquamarine is ok for wear but not 24/7 because it will get scratched or chip eventually

If I "notice" that I am wearing my jewelry, i.e. it pinches, needs to be readjusted, pulls or pokes inany way, then it isn't a good daily piece to wear for me.
I would prefer to wear a flat ring with diamonds set into it. :)

I never take my rings off and I do everything from working on the boat to washing the car to bathing the dogs and much worse. I have one (e-ring) that sticks up pretty far and have no trouble, but it's not fragile like say an emerald.

I'd say if you're like me and wear the same stuff all the time, including sleeping in it, something closer to the finger would be the best choice.

Here's what I wear on the right hand...a Claddaugh on the pinky and the other I had made from the 1/4ct diamonds from my tennis bracelet when I had it sized down to fit me.

YEP I DO - sorry i couldn't explain any better ;)

gorgeous ring! congrats - and funnily enough pretty close to what I had in mind except that it has a diamond setting all around the large aqua.

thanks for this - exactly what I was worried about, and since my funds are limited I would rather get a ring that i don't worry about majorly. my SIL got a pomellato nudo with a prasolithe, and the stone has chipped at the corners. for more than $1000 I can't accept that. I guess I still want to save up for a typical diamond solitaire e-ring ;)

^ the little eternity ring is separate :)

I figured - very cute, I love eternity bands. I meant that your topaz ring is pretty close to what i had mind, but that it has some diamonds set around the stone.

sorry but I talk all day at work so i get so tired and incapable of expressing myself properly...

yep, I want something for 24/7. your e-ring is beautiful but diamonds are properly withstanding the test of time best. I love the ring from your tennis bracelet, i want something similar but for the middle finger, if I don't get the aqua ring.

thanks for everyone's input - currently I am leaning towards the band with diamonds, it is quite a big ring which would look good on the right hand middle finger

I only have two rings that are gemstones that "stick up". Both are AMAZING, but unfortunatly I bought them before I knew how soft some stones could be. My vintage aquamarine looks slightly hazy and my peridot was scratched the first time I wore it :-(
So my vote goes to a harder gemstone or diamonds.

Consider diamond for daily wear as some gemstones are not as hard and are better suited for occasions. Perhaps a nice half eternity diamond ring instead of solitaire?
