Hi, my company worked for FENDI RFID project . The tags contain only a serial number and the number enconded in barcode. This in only for fight false and track the gray market (unauthorized stores to sell the brand). Stop with paranoid of 'the big brother' this king of tag can be read only in area of 1/2 meters and only with expansive reader and antennas; however you can remove it, a duplicate tracking number is in the internal side of the woven label the grants consumer in case of problems and returned goods. See the photo of a sample like the label used by FENDI at the link https://www.dropbox.com/sh/63k9i8xz2yzz7z7/yMvsp61mzw.
If you have questions about RFID in fashion i'm here. Bye

It's more about tracking inventory than "authenticity" of the product. Its a great tool to track inventory for shipping & recieving. Do you have any idea how much of a PITA it is to take apart a pallet full of merch to count it and make sure your getting everything your supposed to? It takes a lot of time/payroll. It's much much easier to use RDIF tags on your product and take a scanner and scan a pallet full of product. Also RDIF tags are controversial because it's hard to know how much info they are really tracking and who/where readers are. They have been becoming much more common in merchandising in the past 5-8 years due to how much easier it makes receiving products for warehouses & stores and are found it lots of common products.

They are also being used by credit card/debit card companies too, so you don't even have to swipe your card you can wave it(permitting the store your at has a reader). This use is very controversial because it is VERY easy for your CC or DC card info to be stolen. You can buy RDIF readers online walk around somewhere busy and get a ton of info and cause a world of hurt on those poor unsuspecting people. You can tell if your credit card or debit card has one if it has a symbol on the back. Heres a link with a pic of the symbol http://adr.enal.in/articles/de-rfid-your-credit-card

Do any of you remember the outcry when Benetton decided to put RFID chips in all of their clothes? Did they ever actually implement that? I remember there being such a huge backlash against the company.

I am totally against any type of tracking device whether short range or long range in any product I buy. It does not fight against contraband and in all honesty should not be in anything regardless of it's ability to be removed or not. If it's for customs purposes then it should be on the master case not in the individual product. I'm not happy with Fendi for this. It is an intrusion of privacy and another way of lulling people to accept these type of devices. Thanks but no thanks Fendi..you can keep your bags.....(that's all)

OMG I'm completely freaking out right now. I just bought a $1,100+ bag from Bluefly and it comes with that card someone posted above that there is an RFID tag in there, but there isn't! And, the buckle on the bag looks like someone painted outside the lines. The gold border has black paint from the inside FF's all over it. And they're trying to tell me it's final sale. There is not RFID card, no Fendi tag other than the hologram tag and a very sloppily made buckle. I'm starting to thing besides receiving a damaged bag, I've received a counterfeit one!

Actually, RFID is something to worry about in general. Especially passports with RFID tags.

Hypothetical worst case scenario regarding bag RFID tags:

This particular use could only be used to track you if each bag has a different tag and when you buy the bag, your name gets added to a database that then gets shared with say "big brother". Then every time you pass by an RFID reader connected to big brother, he would know you were at that location. Of course, if you sell the bag privately, the accuracy of said database would be screwed up.
Thank you for this. Food for thought. A kind of passive data collection. Still, can understand why some would cut out their RFID chips.

Do you want to post pics of it? Sorry that happened to you. Possibly prior owner cut out the RFID chip. Can you see the edges of where the RFID chip goes in the little flap to tell if it's been cut out?

I thought rfid is something to protect you against theft. I have a wallet that is rfid. Some people can steal from you without taking your cards. They just have to be near you as a certain gadget makes a connection with your cards. Now if you are using an rfid wallet this wont happen. This is what happened to a friend. She was out shopping and noticed a guy seemingly following her. When she came home she was very bothered so she checked her account and voila somebody purchased something using her card and her card was with her then. So i thought you meant that

My understanding the RFID in many luxury handbags is for the passive confirmation of ownership only. Your wallet contains anti-RFID--a shield to make it invisible to RFID scanners. That's terrible about your friend! Your wallet with the protection sounds smart, but the RFID chip in bags is similar to a scan code.

Why do they put that in bags?
