So, new Return Requests feature kicked off on ebay last week.
I got one yesterday and one today. Both were for the reason" Wrong size or does not fit". Apparently, they have nothing to do with Hassle Free Returns. I am not part of HFR, but I got the requests to return anyway.
I only have two options in each request: To Accept a Return or Refund without returning.
There is no way for me to apply my restocking fee or deduct shipping cost. Spoke to ebay and was told that that Restocking fee is not currently programmed into this new feature and that if I opt in to hassle free returns, then I can implement the restocking fee.
Just another way for ebay to force you into HFR. I know it will be mandatory soon anyway, but I was trying to stay out of it as long as I can. I like to manage my own business.
So frustrating!

Wait, what? We have to take returns now? I didn't know about that.

It states: you are not obligated to accept a return, but please respond to the buyer soon. It also states that the "request" can be escalated. I guess that is when it will become a case.

My issue is different. I accept returns. I just like to manage my return process my own way,but ebay wants to manage it instead.

I spoke with an eBay Rep and was told they started this at the end of September.

The crazy thing is, no one at eBay could direct me to information regarding this on their site.

I read on seller central that some sellers were choosing the "accept a return" thingie and then just issuing a partial refund once the item arrived. I have no idea how. Maybe you can ask there.

Combine this with the new 180 return period being implemented and forced on everyone by Pay Pal - I've got to ask? Why the heck would anyone want to remain on that site as a seller? It's beyond crazy.

Yes, I have heard that too. I am going to try that when the items are in my posession.

I too accept returns but haven't had anyone go through that process yet. I ask them to email me in 24 hrs and when I refund I refund minus any shipping I paid. I don't charge a restocking fee but think you could just deduct that from the refund as well. All of that is pp and they let you do a partial.

It is going to be interesting. Though how many people do you think remember what they bought and from whom that long ago.

1 word of advice, Do NOT EVER join their "Hassle free returns program"
after several years with 1 "not as described" case I all of a sudden got 3 "Not as described" cases opened in one month after joining the Hassle free program. The items were precisely as described and pictured. They were just typical buyers remorse which I am used to and accept returns no questions asked, but no way to convince Ebay of that.

The only way they get return shipping paid is to put it in as "Not as Described". Buyers aren't stupid, they learn quick how to game the system. Hassle Free program just encourages you to get defects.

I sell high dollar items and have pretty low transaction counts. They counted as defects and killed my rating and likely will not drop for a year.

This defect system is total crap. I was Top rated Seller since it had started, likely will be impossible now to get top rated in my category. A few more cases and I risk losing my selling privileges or suspended and with 100% positive feedback I'm considered a substandard seller.

Ebay could care less about the medium to small sellers, all they are doing now is catering to the big box clients and Chinese sellers. Is Best Buy, Adorama, Newegg, Toys R Us etc. paying 10% final Value fees? do they have to keep to the same defect policies? I seriously doubt it.

The consignment shops, Pawn shops and all us small to mid size sellers reselling hard to find, used and vintage items are the ones who built Ebay. It seems they have forgotten that.

I just recently have ventured out to try new venues. So far it is going pretty good, This holiday season I suspect less than half my business will come from Ebay.

I started selling on Ebay back in 1998 and have been one of their biggest fans and have recommended them to many buyers and sellers.

It actually saddens me what they have turned in to. They still might be a decent place for buyers but no longer for small to mid size sellers. The new policies basically ran the local Ebay consignment shop out of business. I suspect they are not a unique story as of late.

In 2015 we will not have a choice. If you accept returns, the HFR will be mandatory.
