Resetting a Solitaire

Would you re-set a Tiffany solitaire into a non Tiffany setting?

I really don't like the simplicity of my setting (basic 6 prong ring) at all. I drool over the really elaborate stuff, like Tacori. Just an example, I see tons of really gorgeous non branded settings everywhere.

Do you see any issues into re-setting a Tiffany ring into a non branded setting?

I've casually mentioned this to a friend or two- and they both gave it the side eye.

Just curious on your thoughts.

I personally don't see anything wrong with it, especially if you'd be happier with the diamond in another setting. After all, you're the one who's going to be wearing it. Do what makes you happy.

The only thing that makes your ring a Tiffany ring is really the setting (IMO); they get their diamonds from the same places everyone else does but get the higher quality ones.

Tacori does makes some beautiful settings, and there are definitely some pretty non-branded settings floating around out there too!

Have you asked Tiffany if they can reset the ring for you? I feel like resetting the ring in a non-Tiffany setting would be a bit of a waste of the premium you paid for the Tiffany brand, KWIM? You could maybe ask about the new Embrace setting, which is definitely more elaborate. However, I have no idea how Tiffany regulates their engagement ring business, but it never hurts to ask!
Good luck!

Did you choose this design originally? The beauty of that particular design is its simplicity.

I would have Tiffany's re-set it for you into one of their more elaborate settings if that's what you really want. I wouldn't take it elsewhere.

Think about it. This forum can be a lethal enabling playground. Do it because you want to, not to impress people here, kwim?

I would ask Tiffany if they can reset in a Schlumberger, round Legacy (bead set) or the embrace. You'll pay for the new setting, but you at least won't void your Tiffany warranty.

I agree with everyone else - have Tiffany reset it for you in one of their other settings!! And if you are serious about resetting it in a Tacori or another elaborate setting, I would inquire about the warranty as well. You don't want to void that baby! I love their free cleaning service at any Tiffany store and would hate to lose that and other "perks"!!

^ other perks??? Do tell!

LOL, Contessa. . .you caught me! To be honest I can't think of any other perks! I'm a new Tiffany owner and didn't want to NOT mention other free services Tiffany provides (polishing? rhodium dipping for white gold items?) . . . so I was just trying to be all encompassing but as vague as possible haha!

Had it been any other solitare i would tell you to do it! But with tiffanys I agree with everyone else that you paid a premium and it gets wasted if you reset in non tiffanys. If you are able to exchange and upgrade the setting I would see if you could do the embrace or ribbon. Those were my two options if i couldn't find the diamond I wanted to put in my tacori. Or you could always do a pave tacori wedding band with the Tiffany solitaire? Best of both worlds.

Or even keep your ring the way it is and buy a colored stone to put into a tacori setting so you can switch it out when you feel bored or wear on your right hand?

Thanks, everyone. As an aside, the warranty is only for 1 year from date of purchase (the lifetime warranty refers to the fact that the stone meets the specifications set out in the Tiffany diamond certificate only). So, if after one year, one of the stones comes loose in a band, or the setting bends, Tiffany charges to replace/fix. I only found this out the hard way when both of those scenarios happened to me (over a 5 year period). The cleanings are for the life of the ring. My husband upgraded the ring for me last year (same setting, larger stone). Long, complicated story on why we didn't just change the setting then. DH is totally on board with whatever I want to do, though.

I already have both a small channel set band (that I wear with the solitaire) and a larger shared prong band (that I wear on my right hand).

I think someone mentioned earlier the Schlumberger setting. That is exactly what I had in mind! The picture on the website isn't very flattering at all. In the store, it was beautiful on my hand. The issue is that that particular setting is about $14K (setting only). I think that's a little hefty (for just the setting). So, I was beginning to think of looking at more ornate settings outside of Tiffany at a lower price point.

It seems that I have a bit to ponder. Thanks again guys, for all your input.

Any store will clean your ring for free, and that is a ridiculous price for a setting IMO . . . if you KNOW that you are not going to be looking to Tiffany's for their upgrade program then I say go for it.
If it's only in a basic platinum setting now then that in itself isn't worth a large amount.
If your tastes have changed and you want a different setting then do it. A Tiffany's diamond itself is really no different than any other w/ good specs. I don't see why there's be an issue w/ putting a designer stone into a different setting.
Any that you've found that you like?
