.Hermès CEO Jean-Louis Dumas Dies
By: VAINstyle
The Fashion Industry sits in silence as it mourns the passing of yet another family member. On Saturday May 1, 2010, former Hermès CEO Jean-Louis Dumas died at the tender age of 72 do to health complications. The House of Hermes has officially released this statement; “It is with a profound emotion and great sadness that the House of Hermes announces the death of Monsieur Jean Louis Dumas.”

Dumas, often referred to as “tête d’Hermès,” was instrumental in taking the family owned brand, which he is apart of, to the next level of development and had done so for nearly 30 years. During his tenure, Dumas was responsible for continuously branding the message that “Hermès is chic: this state of grace in which one simply knows how to carry a bag, a dress, or a coat.” A simple yet effective message that not only resonates in the fashion industry, but also throughout the world. “He was the prototype of a Man of Light, an enlightened gentleman, curious and open, French and international, full of courtesy and humor. A great man,” Jean Paul Gaultier expressed to Paris daily Le Figaro.

Our heart felt condolences go out to the family and friends of Jean-Louis Dumas. While we sit in silence to mourn this loss, our respect and admiration for his contributions are better served by celebrating his life.

This is sad news - what a remarkable man and Le President of an incredible company.
LilyH - thank you very much for sharing your beautiful letter. You must have written a wonderful letter to him to receive such a graceful reply!

Thank you, sweet Maedi, but to be perfectly honest, I don't recall exactly what I wrote and never kept a copy. But, I think Mr. Dumas would have responded to any letter he received with the same courtesy and grace.

I think that's simply the kind of man he was.

Jean-Louis and Reya Dumas-Hermes in happier times at the Biennale des Antiquaires in Paris around 2001.

And, my treasured letter from Jean-Louis Dumas in 2002. I shall treasure it all the more now.

Ohhhh, what a lovely letter. J you are such a great writer that I can imagine how beautifully you expressed yourself in your letter to H. This is indeed a treasure.

May he rest in peace and by his lovely wife's side.

Lily - Thank you for sharing your letter. It is very clear that M. Dumas-Hermes was touched by your words and love for H.

My thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends. Without question, his accomplishments will always be remembered.

I'm appalled that people were arguing about what parts of the Kelly are machine stitched when this news broke (thread was thankfully locked). I'm uncertain if I'll return to this forum when so many members have such poor judgement during a time of mourning and loss, learn some respect people.

I apologize if that sounded rude and out of place, it's just that when I learned of the news I had hoped to see people here celebrating his life - the first thread I read about it was anything but. Next time I will ignore locked threads altogether.
