Hi! I'm wondering if anybody has had experience or has any thoughts on removing or covering the metal nameplate on their Dooney bags?

I love the style and quality of the 2 Dooney crossbodies I have, but have found myself not wearing them much because I'm not a huge fan of the nameplates. I love the leather crests on the older bags and Florentines though! As they're stitched on, I've considered seam ripping them off to see what happens but also don't want to ruin the bag... Perhaps my best bet would be to go to a cobbler and ask what their opinion is. I really do love them for everything but the metal plates. :/ Just wondering if anyone's ever done this successfully or has any thoughts!

Can you just flip them over--unless there's a pocket in the back? What if you change your mind? It could affect your ability to resell or re-gift to someone later. I tend to gravitate towards the Florentine and the nylon lines for the reason of the nameplate. (We're not alone.)
I do have a few and when you think about it, most handbag brands have their name somewhere on the bag. It's a trend. If it bothers me too much, I turn the nameplate in. I think tend to do that to protect the front of the bag, since I want to keep it looking nice.
BTW, the trend towards logos is coming back......
Good luck!

Oh my GAWSH, you are my sister or brother whoever you are. United in nameplate hate!

Like you, I LOVE the leather logos, whether text or Duck, because they don't interrupt the design of the bag. Also, so many Dooney styles are equestrian; the modern/sleek metal nameplate seems so incongruous on those.

I have wondered how to get rid of it or hide it. So far, I have been buying styles that look mostly the same on the back as the front so I can flip the back and wear the hated nameplate hidden against my body.

If I could find a decal or patch to cover the plate, I'd be happy. I actually think a bag looks better with some sort of icon on it to give visual balance, I just don't want it to be the square metal plate with plain print letters. If Dooney sold Duck patches, I would sew them on or have a cobbler do it. I'd even put a flower patch over it if it weren't a juvenile/kiddie type one.

I don’t think the metal plates are sewn on for easy removal. I think the leather square they are mounted on are sewn, but I think there is a rivet running from the back of the plate through the square and anchored into the bag, hidden by the lining. If you remove the stitches, you could just end up with loose edges of leather around the name plate.

Glad I’m not alone in disliking the nameplate! I would wear my bags backwards but they're both small flap-style crossbodies where the back definitely looks like the back. And starbucksqueen, good point about the resale or gifting value. It's definitely something to consider, though I did buy mine for a very reasonable price pre-loved so going back and forth on that one. I'd mostly just like to get some wear out of them. But aerinha is probably right about the metal plates being anchored on the bag :/ That's what I was worried about. Perhaps if I happen upon a very beat up and cheap second-hand bag on ebay I'll buy it and test the patch stitching removal out! I'll report back if I ever do that.

The easiest solution is probably just to get over my dislike and wear the bags regardless :-s

Oh gosh! How I hate the Dooney metal nameplates! I have three beloved bags with gold nameplates smack in the center of the bags. I've considered taking them off because they look gaudy, but fear that the stitching holes will remain. I wish they had the leather ducks instead. I cannot imagine any fix for this except for maybe a big purse charm.

I am with many of the comments regarding banding/logo or the name plates. I buy mainly Alto and Florentine because the brand name is less visible.
Why should I pay for an item and advertise for the designer for free. I don't mean to insult anyone that feels differently on the subject.
Many, many years ago, I purchased a set of candy tins that looked like village shops. I didn't like the candy but I wanted the five tins. When they arrived they had the chocolate company name. They didn't do that the other years they were sold. Anyway, I mentioned it in my review and people thought I was ridiculous.
I was so happy to read some of you nice people feel the same way.
Back to the Dooney branding topic. Any Dooney lover can spot a Florentine or Alto bag. I don't need to scream and advertise what I am carrying. The shape, style quality leather and color will speak for D&B. No screaming advertising needed. If you want me to advertise for you...the bag better be at least half off.
I lived through the 1980's. I never want to see walking advertisements ever again.

I agree. When we remodeled our kitchen I tried to find appliances without logos. The guy at the appliance store was surprised. He said people steal the logos off top brands and then put them on their cheaper appliances.

DH hates logos. I'll tolerate them as long as they aren't super prominent. I'd have a lot more Dooney bags if they didn't have that patch. When I buy shoes for DH, it is always super hard to find any that don't have logos. I've had to cut off the patch on the back of the heel for him.

That's funny! I appreciate the laugh.
My husband can be quite picky. We were out in public and he starts to complain about his jacket. He was complaining that the problem with his jacket was that it was a "girls jacket".
He was wearing a new Perfect Moment down puffer jacket, a bit pricey French brand, gifted by me for his birthday and approved before I ordered it. How can a jacket purchased in the men's section, with a center full zip, be deemed a "girls jacket"?
Cutting things off the heels is hilarious.
