I would like to purchase for my mother a nice sapphire ring. I tried to get two pictures that shows the ring when it's 'blue' vs when it looks 'black' = non flash vs flash.

The decisions are:
Sapphire #1 = the cheaper option ($850).
10K (11 grams) ring with a sapphire over a carat and the diamonds equal to over a carat. The diamonds are pretty good quality. The sapphire apparently is blue and not black blue.

Sapphire #2: the option that'll break my bank a bit ($1350)

14K (8.9 grams) with a 2 carat sapphire and 4.7 carats of diamonds.

My mother might like both, but I'd like to know if I should get the cheaper option or if that cheaper option is too terrible.

I'm out of my comfort zone with jewelry like this, so I always like to turn to tpf'ers who have a good eye for great jewels to give me some advice. I have a few hours to make a decision.

I should also like to add that I'm weary of purchasing baguette diamond rings only because I've heard that they are a bit more fragile and if one is broken it's more difficult to find a replacement. Again, that's just based on what I've read/heard and I could be completely wrong :)

Thanks!!!!!!

I will probably be no help since I think them both equally beautiful. I do think the baguettes give the second choice a slight edge, but I guess it depends on your mom and her personal style. Good luck with your decision.

You were very helpful. You helped give the 'okay' to either ring which is still good for me. I'm just worried that the first one is abhorrent to people and not a viable option.

I agree that the baguettes are definitely nicer, but they will definitely be out of my price range if I can't get it to around $1k.

My mother just likes a nice sapphire cocktail ring. She's been after one for about 15 years now.

I just worry about the quality of the sapphire and whether I'm overpaying when I shouldn't be.

I like the first option. I think the 2nd ring looks a bit dated but that just my opinion. Which do you think your mom would like??

Thank you very much for your opinion!
I was sorta thinking the same thing too.
I think my mother would like either style. She's always a big fan of really *nice* sapphires and quality diamonds. She loves a nice 'blue' with her sapphire.

But yes, I think the first option could be a winner.

Thanks again

Both are impressive. I prefer the second choice, but I would have liked the first one more had it not been compared to the second - meaning that as a gift the first one is just fine. It is beautiful ... it just isn't AS beautiful (IMO) as the second one. But your mother won't see the two side-by-side, so I would definitely not go over budget.

Good point. :D

Thanks so much for your helpful advice. I appreciate you taking the time to help me consider things from a different/fresh perspective (like everyone else who has posted thus far).

I am also always concerned that the value of the 2nd one is insurmountably more than the first one and that I'd be better off trying to accumulate extra to get the second one. Or, rather, the first one is overpriced.

Of course, like you said, the first one does look nice and if my mother didn't see the side by side she would be more than happy with the first one.

I'm now leaning towards pulling the trigger on the first one. You have all been so wonderful at helping me out.

hmm....I just thought about looking into sapphire #1 seller's history (from ebay) and she/he seems to have purchases from gem stores in Thailand and does sell an awful lot of jewelry for someone needing to get rid of things. Maybe this person isn't legit?

Geez. Decisions, decisions.

Definitely the second one because it is 14k gold. I don't like 10k gold and can't wear it because it causes a reaction to my skin....plus 14k is much nicer.

Thanks for that opinion. You know, I was contemplating the 10 vs 14 carat issue. I know my mother would always prefer 14 over 10.
I completely agree with your opinion about the gold.

Hmmm.....things are a bit more complicated now :)

I can't comment because I don't like these styles. Why don't you choose something with a bigger sapphire and fewer diamonds? That way it can be remodeled later when you decide the style is dated.

Otherwise I'd recommend something more classic or contemporary. Maybe a halo? I do think it's very sweet and generous of you to get a gift like this for your mother. :)

I also see your point as well. This has complicated my consideration quite a bit. Thanks for giving me some good food for thought! I have about 15 mins to make a decision on the first one.

For that price, it will be hard to get super quality; a good one carat sapphire can cost a few thousand. I wonder if she's set on sapphire, or is it the color she's after? Blue Nile has some good London topaz ones in this range, such as:

(Tho if I win the lottery, I'm totally going for this 6 carat sapphire: :) http://www.bluenile.com/cushion-cut...18k-white-gold_47226?track=product&elem=image

LOL. Thanks very much for your response. I know, the price limits my ability to get good quality sapphires. I just know my mother was always lusting after one (and it is her birthstone). I remember sitting in jewelry stores watching her ogle a nice sapphire ring with some sort of ballerina/cluster embellishment.

I agree with you about that 6 carat sapphire. It's a STUNNER!

I worry about this seller. I really do. She seems to sell A LOT of items and her story doesn't really seem to check out. She says in each listing that she'll melt down the gold, but she's been saying that since Nov in her listings and it always seems 'immediate'.
