Hi there,
I spoke very briefly with my jeweler a few weeks ago about making a sapphire ring when I had saved up enough, and have started thinking abit more about how I want it to look...i would love it if you could help me with 2 decisions...

First...the shape...I am leaning towards a cushion cut but I am not very experienced in gemstone jewelry...is this a cut that will showcase the beauty of the stone best? I wanted something a little different than round but this is not set in stone. Pardon the pun :smile1:

Second...the setting...we initially discussed a one carat stone with a small diamond halo but I am wondering if I should forgo the diamonds and go for a bigger stone. To me sapphires look great with diamonds but perhaps this is because I haven't seen many rings I like with just the sapphire alone. Do you have a preference on this?

Thanks so much in advance.

I think Cushion cut gemstones ate to die for! However, I do have a soft spot for oval sapphire halos like the one I linked.

If you want something really different, my friend has a marquise cut ruby with diamond halo ring--it is just fabulous. Hers is very small though (maybe .3 ct center stone) but noticeable and very appropriate for everyday.

I'm in the same boat as you aesthetically, I don't usually like the look of solitaire gemstone rings.

Oh that's interesting. A marquise ruby sounds nice. I have a small wish list of rings that I would like to have made over time and a ruby is on it. I was thinking a cabochon but I haven't really put much thought into it because it won't be for a while yet. I also would like a yellow diamond, an asscher cut diamond and a green stone of some kind ..from what I have read emerald seems to be soft for rings?

I love the way sapphires look when paired w diamonds..I personally love the look of a delicate diamond halo on any shape sapphire! I don't like the way many are done that looks like a star or pointy diamond settings around the sapphire but that's JMO..
Good luck!!

I think you should go for a bigger stone b/c it will look too small soon. Cushion is just beautiful but I heard from a jeweler that an oval cut reflects light better and thus look better. Diamond are also suppose to bring out the beauty in the sapphire otherwise it will look too dull. Good luck

Thanks! Yes I like the simple halo more than the other setting with the pointy diamonds...though I've seen some of those that have a really nice vintage feel.

Thanks for the feedback on the cut. So I guess the consensus is to go with bigger stone and keep the diamonds :smile1:;)

I think diamonds and sapphires are PERFECT together. I think a round or cushion with a halo of diamonds would be awesome. If you don't go that round, a round diamond center with round or pear sapphire sides, OR a round sapphire center with round or pear diamond sides would be amazing too. OR all three in cushion would be amazing too. You might not have as much luck finding a sapphire in cushion shape as you might in pear or round.

I have a one carat oval sapphire with two diamonds on either side. The one carat looks really petite. I would go bigger if I was you. My ring is a family ring from my Husband. It came from Ceylon in the 1970's and the gold it is set in is really soft. The first time my Mother-in-law had it on the central stone came out. So she had the claws extended and it looks awful... I am desperate to get it reset, but I am not sure in to what. I am not really a yellow gold wearer either....... I would love to see what you end up with x

Thanks for the ideas! They all sound amazing... I got the idea for a cushion cut browsing on the natural sapphire company website. Those just looked so fiery to me. Well ... Blue fire anyway.

I am still saving up and sounds like I might have to save more than I originally planned if I go for a bigger size. My fingers are really puny though.. I am only 5'1" and small, but the upside is that smaller stones don't look as small on me. :smile1:
